DNR Laws

I am looking into kayak fishing and I did a search on SC DNR web Site about rules and regsand I couldnt really find what I was looking for. These are the things I know: not required to register kayak, type I II III pfd, Visual Distress Signal and Sound Producing Device. What am I missing? If you have a link that would be great. Any other advice for a newbie?

Pretty much good to go on your kayak fishing. I don’t know of any sites to visit but i do know that that is all you need. I do think you need type III PFD.

I all most forgot. You need to have a type of light incase you come in at night. A head lamp works great and DNR approve of it.

Thansk for the info. if you think of anything else please post it. Any reviews of the hobie mirage outback? I need to know the pros and cons of this yak. I have the itch really bad to get a kayak and I am trying to hold off until I have done my research.

My fishing buddy has the Hobey Outback. He absolutely loves it. The peddle/fin system is efficient and moves him along at about 3 knots effortlessly. I have trouble keeping up with him in my Wilderness Systems Tarpon 160, especially if I have a headwind and chop.

Wide, and stable to fish from. The only drawback is the weight of the whole system, as much as my yak, which is 4’ longer. If you get it, get the wheels to transport from vehicle to water. you will not be sorry.

Those who can’t fish, spend too much!

I was reading this topic on Fl. Sportsman and I am wondering why this guy said that the outback is not a good yak for fishing currents, tidal swings and salt marsh creeks? I understand the oyster beds beating up the fins. Any ideas on this…

Open Mud-mouth & insert foot
"I knew about the pedals and had thought there were sails too. Looks nice I’m sure they are great for the fishing ya’ll do on the left coast. Up here or tidal swings, currents, oyster beds, salt marsh creeks need a different kind of yak!</font id=“red”>
Hope you can post a pic of her 1st fish caught out of the “Papya Pedal Predator.”

I’m a 42 year old smoker and I’ll still take the Tarpon -vs- Mirage race callenge any time Kevin you are nuts"

Keeno,

Blackwater outfitters in Pinopolis is someone you should call. We bought 2 from him. Necke is the brand. They are extremeley narrow and will allow you to paddle against the tide. Not the most stable but when paddling with other’s that have the wide body yaks, we have to wait for them to catch up & in some instances they just can’t go where we go. For comfort don’t go wide, but do splurge on a good seat that has rod holders & a small storage compartment.

Blackwater outfitters uses premium yaks. He has about 30 that he uses for 1 or 2 years then he sells them. Example: a $1,000.00 hull new retail…he might sell for $500.00 to $550.00. The yaks are in good shape maybe a mark or a ding here or there.

Web address is www.blackwateradventure.com the phone is 1-800-761-1850. I can’t remember the guy’s name that owns it but he will meet you with a trailer load of different yaks for you to try and is very smart in helping you find what you want. He’s sold 2 to my wife Stella. Good price, good product…good people to deal with. A good call to make before you decide.
