dnr rules

So getting ready to do some surf/creek fishing this summer(actually next weekend) and been doing some reading and have got a couple of questions.

Looks like trebble hooks are a no-no, is that right? singles only?

Under the red snapper group of fish is says that non stainless circle hooks are required, so what if I catch a snapper with a steel one?

lastly, has anyone used freshwater herring for saltwater fishing? Legal? Results?

Don’t worry, you won’t catch one. I promise
You can use trebles
Herring is a fine cut bait
Don’t forget you need a license, even if bank/surf fishing

Hoppy is right; snapper is an offshore species in Charleston.

What are you trying to fish for?

If fishing from the surf, I would be using cut shrimp (frozen is fine), mullet, mullet chunks, or quartered blue crab. 20-30lb test leader, Carolina rig with enough lead to keep you in place and not moving with the current. Simple and it works fine.

May all your favorite bands stay together…

You catch grey/mangrove snapper sometimes in the surf by rocks just not big, biggest I’ve got was 11 inches but there usually 6-9 inches and it is a rarity.

Sorry, I meant live herring. It would just be convinient to catch where I am, maybe this weekend, then take it there next weekend.

From what I gather, Red drum and sheepshead is what I will probably catch. still trying to memorize species and size limits but I will probably just have to keep a copy of the book in my back pocket

I am using 30lb braid and 30lb steel leaders, will also need more weights and some of those beads.

You don’t need steel leaders. 20-30lb mono or flouro will work better. I would stick with 20lb at max and get some shrimp. Your best bet would be catching whiting, and they like shrimp best.

Fish rules is a good app for your phone to keep track of size limits and species. I first used it in Florida after FWC recommended, but it is accurate up here too.

Caught 5 whiting (barely keepable) and one baby sharpnose. cut squid on the first whiting and sharpnose then switched to shrimp. all from the beach at IoP
