I owned one in the 70s and I thought that they then required the sc 181 ad or whatever “registration numbers” on the bow.
looked at a charleston hobie 16 that did not have any numbers, has the rule changed?
Some small boat titleing rules have changed in last 20 -30 years
FROM SC DNR BOATING WEBSITE PAGE:
http://www.dnr.sc.gov/boating.html
The following are required to have current title and registration:
All motorized boats and watercraft; except *exempted vessels;
All sailboats </font id=“red”> are required to be titled
All outboard motors five (5) horsepower and greater are required to be titled since July 1, 1974.
Boating - Sailboats
Since July 1, 1974, sailboats over 14 feet in length had to be titled. If the sailboat had any propulsion it was also required to be registered. Sailboats during this time period that were 14 feet or less did not have to be titled but if they had any type of propulsion they had to be registered.
However, effective, June 8th, 1989, the law was changed which required all sailboats no matter what length to be titled. All Sailboats that have any type of propulsion need to be registered.
If you purchase a sailboat that is currently registered/title and you choose not to use any type of propulsion you will only have to title the sailboat.
$10.00 Title - Sailboats without any propulsion/wind only
$10.00 Title - Sunfish
$10.00 Title - Hobie Cat </font id=“red”> (Any Hobie Cat with any type of propulsion will be required to register which has an extra $30.00 fee)
$40.00 SC Sailboats Registration and Title with propulsion: outboard, trolling motors, diesel engines, inboard
$30.00 (Late fee) Any sailboat that was 14 feet and under and has not titled since June 8th, 1989 will pay a late fee.

Yamaha F115
Pungo 120
but titling is a piece of paper, like a car title.
Is it “registration” that makes you put the numbers on the bow? Thanks for the link,I had seen that but they do not explains what requires the numbers- is it registration? which is not required for sailboats with no power
You title it for $10 so that you can show ownership and sell the sailboat in the future (and so the state/county collects TAX $). You do not put #s on the side of a Hobie Cat. Registration #s are required for boats with propulsion (I think over 5 HP but I’m not sure about that HP #). If you put an outboard on the Hobie, you would need registration & #s
