Do it yourself carb rebuild

Thinking of doing a carb rebuild on my 1996 Johnson 112 VR. Best shop manual suggestions anyone? Best source for a rebuild kit? Should I have my head examined or is it doable for someone who is fairly handy?

Sammie

obviously OMC manuals are the best, but a clymer or seloc will do for what you are doing, ususally around $30
do both carbs at teh same time.
make sure you thoroughly clean the insides.
we stock those kits. about $20 without the floats
no need to replace the floats unless they are damaged and have fuel leaking into them.

Thanks for the advice, Chris. I think I might take a stab at it, but if I get stymied and have to bail out, I will let you guys finish the job. Thanks for all that you contribute to this forum.

let me know how it turns out… have 6 that are about due.
What do they charge to rebuid carbs? thinking a pro with a soaking tank would be worth the $… if it where under $200 per motor (3 carbs)
Due they charge per carb, or per motor?

2502 trophy twin 175 mercs
“The Rum Runner”
under construction

$159 for the first carb
$79 for each of the others

we use an ultrasonic cleaner

I did mine (1995 88hp Johnson) with a Seloc manual. The Seloc has the necessary info, good step by step instructions, and good diagrams. The only annoying thing about the manual I have is that it covers numerous similar motors and shifts from one motor to another from paragraph to paragraph. I ended up getting a yellow highlighter and boxing in the paragraphs that applied. Other than that, I just followed the instructions.

If your 1996 112 is like my 1995 88, then you need a long skinny standard screw driver to pull the jets out. I had an old one with a blade that was slightly to wide that I put on a grinder and shaped a little. You need the head of the screw driver to fit the face of the jet perfectly to keep from boogering up the face of the jet. Booger it up and you get to buy new ones. Even so, they’re not expensive.

I wouldn’t shy away from it.

You guys are empowering me to try this myself. Of course, it will be the kind of job that takes me three times as long as it should and since I may not do this again for a few years, I’ll forget everything I learned this time when I try it again…

I’ll keep everyone posted.

But it will be rewarding when you turn the key and it starts! Follow the manual step by step and you will be fine.
