Buck hall camping and shrimping this past Saturday and Sunday .16 y.o. Son came to visit and looked at two day catch for both days as I was cooking son pointed out with camp ground fees, gas for boat and truck, food, bait binder ,fire wood, camping supplies ,misc supplies that we were eating shrimp that cost almost 10.00 bucks a piece !!! Says to me" dad , they don’t taste like they cost 10 bucks a piece as he chuckled?" Thanks son, what a rough weekend season for shrimping .
The economics of rec shrimping never add up. If that’s why you are doing it, then you are missing the point IMO. I don’t think you are, but your son is Spending a weekend with your son on the water and camping?.priceless.

Won’t remember spending 15 bucks on bait binder but will remember catching this fellow in my net
If you hunt, fish, shrimp, etc, you’d better be doing it because you love it.

I don’t shrimp for shrimp. I do it to enjoy being on the water. Shrimp are only a biproduct for me.

We caught Two this year at the same time one was 5lbs and the other was 7lbs. I thought I had hung an old anchor while I was pulling up my new net and that it was now going to be ruined. I laughed my ass off when my shrimping partner who is a reformed North Dakota boy didnt know what the hell they were. His wife wanted to know if we could eat them. I told them I suppose you could but I dont think that it would be worth the fight for the little bit of meat on them. Memories are why we spend a week in MCVL every year, drink copious amounts of Miller Lite, spend way too much money on non essiential items, and god knows what the shrimp per pound breaks down too. Its all about having a good time and enjoying time well spent with friends and wife. In our case it is what we call our “Daddycation” no kids allowed! We will laugh all year about that one week with the greatest friends a couple could have, and plan for next year.

My very first cast on opening day rendered two horseshoe crabs. Looking at their relationship to each other I can only quess that they both had gotten lucky. The smaller one was mounted center/aft and was not going to turn loose for any reason. After five minutes of trying I finally got them out of my net. The whole time their two tails were waving everywhere. The only reason I got them separated was because the bigger crab fell out of my net first leaving the smaller one behind. My first encounter with crab porn. What a show!!!
Cost of shrimp: I made four new friends this year and met up with several old ones. Caught up with families since last year, told fishing lies, joked, laughed, got help and gave help with shrimping.
I’ll finish the season with 2 1/2 coolers of shrimp and half of that I have already given away and made a bunch of people happy. Cost - as far as I’m concerned the shrimp was FREE.
if you think recreational shrimping is expensive try owning a hunting property and having a dove field and duck pond. you don’t do it for the money you do it for the memories.
