Haven’t fished since that 80? weekend before Christmas, fished the Dr John VonLee memorial tourney on Saturday. Fished with my fianc? and VonLee’s former Citadel rommate that came up from Miami for the event. Target species: trout, red, flounder, grand slam (all length based). Put boat in at 545, started casting TWs for the first hour with only 1 blowup. Fished hard all morning, grubs, dos, fresh shrimp, cut mullet…nada. Finally at 11am I finally end the skunk…18"trout. Now on to find a red. Posted up on a oyster/shell bank casting arties…the mullet rod goes off, 24" red landed. Now we need a flounder for our grand slam entry. I’ve only caught a flounder ‘on purpose’ one time, this tourney 2 years ago. Worked some spots, nothing…decided to make a run and try one more spot before time ran out. I hook up, its fighting like a towel…flounder in the boat with 15 mins of fishing time left!!! Barely legal, but high fives all around, we got our grand slam entry! Fished from 526-paradise, was a super slow day, only caught 3 fish. Used doa,TW,spinner baits, gulp, fresh shrimp, cut mullet, zman paddle and curly), only caught fish on the copper penny curly and the red on cut mullet on Carolina rig. Back at the after party we ended up taking the trout and Grand Slam categories; ) We didn’t catch much but was one of the most exciting days on my boat. The best part was having my fianc? on board, she fished hard all day and accepted our awards, she was beyond excited when our names were announced. Hope everyone had a great weekend.
