Docklight Trout 10/11/13

Headed out with a buddy, Fly Rods in hand to hunt for some docklight trout. Rode out to a dock and waited for the trout to crush the surface. As soon as they started breaking the surface we started casting. Started off with a gummy minnow, he landed one, then I did. So I switched over to a small baitfish I had tied the night before. Ended with 6 landed trout 2 bluefish. I also found out why I tie my own flies. Toothy critters those bluefish are.

The baitfish on the right was the one I caught the majority of my fish on

How the fly turned out …

Look forward to the next time

What materials are those flies tied with?

Nice work on the trout! When I was a kid (about 50 yrs ago), my Dad and I would catch tons of trout under the lights on our dock. The preferred tackle was a cane pole baited with a strip of white pig skin, I think it was Uncle Josh’s. They came in a little glass jar. Anyhow, we would see the fish crashing the glass minnows under the light, cast out and jig that bait across the surface. Awesome topwater action!
I have tried over the years to re-create this with limited success. Lots of blues but few trout.

Nice job great pictures.

Nice report. Gotta try that. Got my fly rod tying materials, just need the practice. Looking forward to my first saltwater fish on the fly.
