Dodgy situation - question

I posted this in inshore reports but was out at Dynamite hole on sunday. I was going to go to the outside of the jetties from the inside, but realized it was pretty rough, decent sized waves coming through, tide was outgoing.
Decided not to go thru gap, but boat wouldn’t reverse, even at pretty much full throttle. I had enough room to go forward and avoid any contact at full lock but it was def a bit scary not being able to back away.
i cant believe the tide could outpower my motor, could it have anything to do with backing down int a nasty sea. Boat worked fine in reverse after.

thanks

Reverse on a boat is just a suggestion. With the way the tide can absolutely rip through the dynamite hole and add in the usual slop you see there when wind opposes tide, your reverse is absolutely ineffective in that situation. You are probably very lucky you didn’t back down under a wave and get swamped. I bet the pucker factor on that one was about 11.

I was out there wednesday and my boat simply would not reverse at one point backing into a swell.
Makes you aware of the power of that ocean.

“No… it’s okay, I know the way out…”

Agree with comments above. Be very careful in rough water trying to back up. One wave over the transom and you all might be floating with a turtled boat. Similarly, never anchor off your transom.

Yes, it was a bit tricky, I was watching behind me as i tried to back up and obviously increasing RPMs pushed the stern down, thats when i stopped and made the decision to gun it a bit forward for a sharp turn. Def made me realize first hand that you can get into trouble pretty quickly if you arent paying attention.

Good to read about a ‘lesson learned’ did not result in injury or loss.

Had an older stratos bass boat that had some issues backing off a trailer if not deep enough. In my infinite wisdom and youth I adjusted the reverse linkage so it would go more than half throttle. (reverse on all boat I know is limited…) Was backing up against current and pushed it too hard… I did swamp the boat, but fortunately it did not sink and bilge took water out. I have no doubt if I’d have done that in choppy or wavey water things would have been much worse.

Glad you made it through ok!! There is no teacher like actually experience.
