Does anyone fish in the ocean? I’d love to go out sometime. I have a 16’ hobie adventurer in florida, and have always loved the idea. If I can figure out a way to make amas, I have a new sail I just purchased, can turn my yak into a hobie adventure island. That would be awesome, could sail and troll if the waves are not too rough. If you have any experience fishing in a yak in the ocean, or desire to do it sometime, let me know, chime in. I’m eager to give it a shot, although clearly because of safety, don’t want to try solo.
Carter (Lost@Sea), Dave (Dolphin Dave), Gordon (Spinners), myself, and at least a few others do from time to time. Some places are more kayak friendly than others and you need to be up to speed on surf launches and self rescues.

I do just to wash everything off real good
Less is more when heading out to the ocean fishing
launched in the ocean once, that was the last time and I stayed near the beach, current was ripping, and really scary … I will stick with creeks inshore haha
Bragging may not bring happiness,
but no man having caught a large fish,
goes home through the alley.

Well I tried once, but I had a native magic 12 then and didn’t do it right. I was towing the yak behind myself in the surf when a wave rolled the yak and everything got water/sand in it. I have abetter kayak now, an hobie adventure 16’ and I’d like to try again if anyone is going. Of course, I’m new here and new to ocean fishing in a yak, so I will rely on others experience in these matters if anyone wants to go or is planing on it, please let me know.
Speaking of beach launches/landings - where is the best place to practice this? When the weather warms up I want to take the kayak out and leave the fishing gear at home.

Good idea Lewis. The waves here seem a lot smaller to me to times I went to folly beach than Florida, where waves were huge.
I like the Charleston Harbor
Sharks + Giant Red Fish
Be ready to get wet some giant boat wakes out there

I always loved launching next to fort moultrie on sullivans island …bull reds baby and you do hook up with a shark…always fun…i have been in 4-5 swells…the current passing over the jetties off of the beach goes out a ways and it can get hairy at times …its almost like being in a pot of boiling water…makes for a wild ride!!!

Capt. Dave:
Where in Charleston harbor do you launch from? If I get my adventurer up here, you want to go sometime.
Yak4fish:
what do you mean by 4-5 swells. Not 4-5 feet right? or does that mean 4-5 ft. swells? I want to give it a shot if your interested. Although won’t go if there are 4-5 ft. seas.

At the righttide that’sthe easiest launch around. At the wrong tide it gets sporty… pot of boiling water / washing machine / a wild ride is a good description.

what’s the right tide? where in ft. moultrie, or is off the beach. I’ve seen what looks like a beach of ft. moultrie on google maps.
I found a local tide chart. My guess is when tide is slack it’s calm although that might not be the best time to fish.

I like launching there when the tide is low enough that swells aren’t rushing over the North Jetty.
You can also launch into the creek at Pitt St bridge and it’s a short paddle out into the harbor right at the tip of Sullivan’s Isl.

Makes more sense to me, if its safer. When are we going?
toobusy got to it first…yeah i have been in some rough water out there…as long as it dont get to sketchy and im nit getting bounced around im not worried about riding the swells as it is a smooth ride glide along…the water there do get very sketchy around the jetties…if you are not a strong paddlers or experienced in rough water i would not advuse trying thus location unless the tide and conditions are right

that’s the plan, time the tides get into a safe location and drop an anchor or troll. I just got a sail for my yak, and I’d love to troll the harbor, see what I can get into if the weathers right. I just need a few weeks, until I get my apt. here and bring up my yak. In the meantime, I’ll just rent them from time out sports.
Not to fish, but i drop crab traps here in myrtle beach about 300 yards off shore from my 12 footer. Its a little hairy at times Especially the paddle out with two large traps tied to the front and back of the yack with 150ft line and bouy on each…not to mention the weight in the traps and rotten chicken.
So I take it you have success with your crab traps, that’s cool. Me, I’d love to fish on a reef. That’s my favorite fishing if anyone knows a reef that’s close to shore.
Anyone going out this upcoming weekend?
