I went down below last night and my tackle bag looked like it just went out and purchased a ■■■■ fur coat.
YUCK!
Installation seems easy enough – cut out a big hole in the hatch and put the thing in place…
I also really like this one, but it is huge, it will take up deck space, and I’m not quite sure how I’d cut a hole that large in the top of the cabin and then through the headliner down below:
Never seen one like that. I would check with your local WestMarine store or the one in Charleston and see if they can refer you to an install shop to put it in. Sounds like you are doing a great job with the new ride. When you get it finished let me know I would like to see it.
What did you decide to use to get rid of the mildew in the cabin? I have a little bit in mine and would like to treat it.
Silver, I thought a Coastal had a front hatch in the cabin? I don’t think I’ve ever seen either one of those vents installed. If it’s mounted where the hatch should be you’ll never keep the water out of the cabin. If dampness, humitity or water dropplets get a cheap de-humidifier at Walmart and plug it up with your battery maintainer while on trailer.
I went ahead and ordered the one I linked to above – the bottom one that’s the stainless, solar-powered one.
I’m going to cut a hole in the large hatch. It’ll pull air out when the sun’s up, as well as charge the batteries so it will run at night, too.
Then, on the doors that lead down below, I’m going to install two 3" round Perko stainless (or maybe white) vents to allow airflow to come through.
This should combat the problem!
I’ve yet to really do anything about it. I did use some “anti-mold/mildew” Lysol and I think it may have helped the sections that I treated, but hopefully after I install this stuff, I’ll be able to eliminate the problem and go ahead and do the cleaning I’ve been wanting to do.
USMCsilver, have you tried leaving the front hatch slightly open and the cabin door cracked? Personally I hate drilling big holes in boats. Not to mention that hatch you are drilling into is very expensive to replace. I also would be worried about the vent failing and allowing water in. We keep our boat under a shed and leave all the fish boxes, livewells and coolers open. I also leave the cabin door cracked as well as the front bomar hatch cracked. I don’t have much problems with smell or mildew.
Now the fresh water system smells TERRIBLE, but that is a different story.
If you can’t fix it with a hammer, you’ve got an electrical problem.
