Its said that the customer is always right and i guess i
agree but they can also be a POS. By 9:30 I’d had enough
and while crossing the bridge it occured to me that it was
pretty flat out. Headed home, shredded the Outlook daily planner
and loaded the boat. Thought about looking for crew but since
the night before is short notice I figured the SAME day was real
short notice. Thought about taking our hound dog but once he saw the float plan I couldn’t find him anywhere.
Left the landing at 10:30, made 30kts for 60 milesENE. Schools of
bonito and kings everywhere. Wwent to set out the outriggers and
realized I’d left the poles in the truck (DOH!)oh well, down to 5 lines. Got 4 out and 3 go down, 2 boneheads and a snake king, all
released. Get 5 out and 2 go down more of the same. From 95’ out to
110’ there was just acres of topwater action. Picked out and ran to
a ledge in 135’, get them set and 3 go down with cudas, re-set, same
thing again, started to switch off to some lures. Trolled to the S’west banks and beyond hoping for a late afternoon bite, at 6:15
something crushed the WFB and screamed off 100 yards and then just stopped…I got the rod down and there was still pressure, dropped the boat down to idle forward and slowly made headway…10 minutes later then fish screams off 50 yards and stops, this goes on for 30 minutes, all the sudden the line goes slack…sh&* I pulled the hook
start to reel up and it comes tight again and zzzzziiiiiiiiiing it rips off another 50 yards, lines is at a 40 degree angle and by now I have drifted into 180 feet, I bump the drag up to 14lbs and gain back
maybe 30 yards and it goes slack again…swivel failure right at the bend. Drank a cold one and made 38kts all the way to the dock.
Tally
6 boneheads
7 snake kings
12+ Cudas( hope their friends be warned)
76 gallons of petrol
Getting my sanity back …priceless.
