Dolphin buffet on a perfect day 4/27

Fished on a friend’s boat on Saturday and despite getting beat to death in the rough conditions, we caught 12 and made it home safely.

Fished my boat on Sunday and found a beautiful lake Atlantic accompanied by everyone with a 20’+ boat. We fished a weedline in 400’ and picked at them until we had a few in the box but not the doubles and triples we were hoping for. We found a tree that had lots of dolphin under it but none would eat and I think they were pressured too hard already. We took a few shots at a triple tail but it also wasn’t interested.
That’s when we made the fateful call to leave the crowd and head out deep to find our own honey hole. We pushed out well beyond 1000’ and past the 380 hole (very easy to do running 45kts). We eventually found a weed line with no other boats on it that was as wide as a two lane highway and had a wicked rip on it with a nice 2 degree temp break. Interestingly, the temp went down from 76 to 74 as we went further out. No trash on either side of the line so it was easy to troll and we kept getting hit as fast as we could put lines out and often they took them before you got the rig passed the prop wash. Everything got hit, meat, plastics, metal; whatever it was they would eat it. The fish here were bigger too with plenty of nice bulls and some huge cows.
We stopped fishing at 23 fish with more than enough for the 4 man crew. We had filled the fish box, the food and drink box, and would have started shoving them into the live-wells if we caught more. There were really nice fish. We really just were wore out and needed a break so we went swimming under the weed line and cooled off a bit and had some drinks and snacks with free swimming dolphin all over the place. It was exactly what you think of when you try and picture the perfect day of relaxed dolphin trolling.
Thanks for all of the hard work from Nick, Mike, and Wayne. Especially thanks to Mike for bringing all of the trolling gear for me and driving all over town to find some bollyhoos. Als

Nice, congrats on a good day.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

Jordan, didn’t Bug Catcher teach you better than that? You are not supposed to stop until you get 3 times the legal limit!!! Ha, just kidding. Glad to know there are other people out there who know how to “limit their catch”. Good on you, and good going on your day.

Also, the reason your thingamajigger keeps popping off is because you are using the wrong kind of wire. You should be using multi-strand cable. Single strand wire is just going to bend back and forth until it eventually breaks off. The cable can handle the action of the lure much better.

When swimming, how close were you able to get to the dolphin??

Filling a fish box is a feat in itself. That had to be a ton of meat for 4 guys. Good work.

Thanks and yes it was plenty of meat for the 4 of us. We could have headed in earlier than we did but it was so nice out in ~1500’ that we just floated around and listened to music and enjoyed the peace. If this weekend shapes up then we will bring some free dive gear and try to get some video under the weed lines and try to spear some dolphin. Also I realized that 150lbs or ice isn’t enough this time of year. The fish were adequately cold when we got back but I like them darn near frozen for the quality of the meat.
Pockets - I didn’t really pay attention this time to how close we were to the dolphin while swimming. I was mostly worrying about the sharks since we didn’t have dive masks on. From experience I can say that dolphin aren’t really afraid of divers and often can be curious. The hard part is to hit them in a spot where they won’t pull off.
