Dolphin fin on outboard

Any body have experience with one. Thinking of adding to a 90 Yamaha 4s. It’s on an 189 tidewater. Thought it would help with performance on plain. Thoughts / opinions? What say you who are more knowledgeable? Thanks

I have put them on every boat I owned. It’s a MUCH cheaper alternative to trim tabs. Had it on the SeaPro I just sold that had a Yamaha F115 and I noticed a dramatic difference. The best thing I noticed was it almost completely stopped my boat from porpoising. Hole shot improved as well. I would recommend spending the money on it.

WHAT DO YOU WANT THE BOAT TO DO THAT IT IS CURRENTLY NOT DOING?

Try looking at the Smart-Tab products line of trim tabs. Very economical and easy to install. I just installed them on my 1997 Hydra-Sport Ocean DC. It has a deep-v (20°dead rise). It made a tremendous difference with stability, hole shot bow rise, better turning performance on plane, and they reduced the speed needed to stay on plane. I never had an issue with porpoising and heard some mixed reviews on the fins. My biggest problem was tipping so felt the fins central location wouldn’t have helped that. They have a great website with lots of info on product performance and even installation. They’re much cheaper than electric tabs. Only had them on the lake a few times but so far I’m VERY happy.

There’s a reason I’m close to the top of the food chain.

Mainly trying to stop boat from tipping while underway. When going slow or not moving it sits pretty.

Is this what you are referring to? These are made by nauticus and are only $120

I have one on my boat but I bought it that way. Part of me has wanted to take it off and see how/if the performance changes appreciably.

A FIN ON THE CAVITATON PLATE WILL DO VERY LITTLE FOR SIDE TO SIDE LEAN.

Before going to extremes and installing gadgets i would try weight distribution first , then try changing the torque tab angle slightly…
Personally don’t think a whale tail is the answer to your issue…

Thanks for the feed back all. A friend suggested that the fin would help with the tilting. Sounds like probably not. Was trying to figure out a way to stop the tilt without asking my wife to sit down.

LOL

probly simpler and safer to just buy another boat

Agree with CHRIS V.

Fix what’s wrong.

Has the hull always ‘leaned’?

If not, what’s changed?

Has the hull been repowered?

I have seen hulls (owned hulls) that when repowered from a 2-stroke to a much heavier 4-stroke, the net effect was to push the transom down in the water further. When that is the case, a pair of doel fins (sp?) was the perfect fix. They gave a surprising amount of lift getting up on a plane, reduced bow rise substantially, and allowed the hull to stay on plane at much lower speeds. So, sometimes, they are a very good remedy for what ails you. But, I wouldn’t be drilling holes in my anti-ventilation plate until/unless I was pretty sure I had the problem figured out.

I put one on my KW1720…it really helped the porpoising (spelling) issue I was having…but, it did nothing for the listing to port side on plane issue. I’m still trying to figure that out…it drives me crazy.

The side to side tipping was exactly why I went with a trim tab. I looked at electric tabs but when the family is on board they’re constantly moving-“I need a drink, now I need a drink, WOW there’s a dead fish”. The weight was always moving. Electric adjustable tabs are good if you can set it and forget it, but they’re also much more expensive than the Smart Tabs. I went with the least costly attempt first and so far it’s made a huge difference. If you install them as the instructions state, they’re close to the sides of the boat giving the max stability. I figured with the fin centrally located on the engine it wouldn’t do much for the side to side problem. Only took about an hour to install, and I was taking my time.

I purchased a new KW 1720 with a 90 yamaha back in 2007.
Mine leaned to port on plane since the day I got it.
So did the other one that the dealer took me on.
Then my neighbor got one from another dealer, and his did it too.

Nature of the boat? The boat was working great so I didn’t mess with it.

Engine torque is causing the lean! Have Momma sit on the other side and it will even out:wink:

UNLESS HE HAS A LEFT HAND ROTATION (YAMAHA DOESNT MAKE ONE) 90HP MOTOR, HIS PORT SIDE LEAN IS MOST LIKELY NOT COMING FROM THE PROP TORQUE.
IT COULD BE ENGINE MOUNTING POSITION, IMPERFECTION IN THE HULL, LOAD DISPLACEMENT OR MABYE A DISTORTION IN THE EARTHS GRAVITATIONAL FIELD.
