When you see dolphin where you are fishing do they normaly scare the fish away?
They love to eat redfish. If you see them in a creek you are fishing, they are after the redfish usually. I’ve seen a school of dolphin attack a huge school of reds over by the subs near Bushy Park. They were literally tossing a 30"+ redfish around like it was a toy. It was too bad we could not go in for a closer look, but we were definitely close enough to get a good look. There are not a good sign to see if they are working the same area you are fishing. They do a lot better than we do!

Yep about a cast away from the boat in Hobcaw.
That’s what I thought thanks.
What’s up Carl.

Fish tend to get lockjaw when they are around anyways, your best bet is likely to move to a new spot. I’ve seen dolphin toss big reds, trout, and flounder way up in the air…

Natural competition. “1 fish, 2 fish, redfish, blue fish.” You could always pack a harpoon and a couple sticks of dynamite to even the odds.

Has anyone ever hooked a dolphin while trolling or any other type of fishing? I’ve had them all around the boat but never seen one hooked or show any interest in a lure.
I just wonder why DNR lets Dolphins get away with keeping over the slot reds. Hey …How can they fish near the subs when we cant ? I am surprised the Government allows this.

Double D.
Easy, I have never heard of one being hooked, but we hit one on my Dads boat years ago.It was travelling with a large group that were “surfing” the bow wake. Messed up a shaft and prop. The only thing we could figure out is that the dolphin was probably sick and that is why it got hit, because there is no way a well dolphin would let that happen.
I move on when i see one. fish dont eat bait when they are about to be food.
We were coming back to the hill one day and came across a cardboard box floating in a big slick. As we passed the box all our lines went off. That box was loaded with dolphin! You could look down into the water and not see the bottom of the school. As we made the turn for another pass we found a big tree about 200 yds from the box. It was loaded also. We were in hog heaven! At one time as I was putting a dolphin in the box, I tossed the lure over the side just to keep safe and not get anyone stuck. The lure hit the water and as fast as it hit, I had another one on. It was crazy! We were loading that boat up fast. The best part about the deal was all the fish were 10/15 lbs. It was like one of the old time movies you see, of guys slinging tuna. We would make a pass by the box and make the turn and go by the tree, so we had just enought time to get ready for the next 1/2 circle. But alas all good things come to an end. Just about the time we were getting tired of slinging dolphin over the side, a bunch of warm blooded type dolphin showed up! The catching shut off! That was the last we saw of the school. But, we were happy as eels in a bucket of snot!

Awesome story dude but he is talking about bottle nose dolphin in the creeks inshore… not sure how you didn’t register that as the title did say “creek”. ![]()

Shevlin! I don’t know one dolphin from another! They are all dolphins to me! I don’t care if they are in creeks, the harbor or the ocean. If you look back I posted about anyone ever hooking one. Again, I don’t care where it was! The original post asked (do they scare the fish away). I only answered ,that they sure do scare the fish away on the open ocean. You know, that these posts will go into other aspects, of anything under the sun! So what are you trying to do? Start some BS, with your nit-picking! I can do the same for you, whenever you feel you need to reply to a post. If that is what you want go for it!
I can verify what Shevlin posted.
We have seen the same thing happen in the Gulf, even around the oil rigs at times. When a large school of bottlenose dolphin showed up, the Kings would leave…as well as everything else. The bite would return if the dolphin left, but it would usually take a while for the fish to turn on again.

We saw a guy lose his rod and reel to a dolphin in the creek north of Folly. The rod and reel skimmed over the surface as a dolphin high-tailed it away, jumping and jumping. Pretty wild.
