Dolphin on the Fly

I had the good fortune of catching this Dolphin on the fly while fishing with Captain Larry Harvey on the Georgetown Office. We caught a smaller one trolling the weed line. Pulling the small fish close to the boat brought this one within casting distance.

What rod weight and leader/tippet size? Carrying my 12 w me these days but been wondering what leader and fly b best?

Here’s the fly I was using.

The rod is a 15 wt. and 15 wt fly line. Orvis Mirage reel with a good drag system. Leader was about 6 feet of 60 pound test Mono and about 2-3 feet of 40 pound flouocarbon tippet because that’s what I had available at the time. Connected with two perfection loops because I can tie these easily and off shore there was no concern in open water getting debris caught in the loops. This made me a little nervous about losing the entire fly line but it worked out this time and I set the drag appropriately. Probably would suggest <30 pound tippet (with braided backing of 30 pound test) if you go “by the book”. The thinking being the tippet should be the weakest point in the set up unless you risk losing the entire line. On this day it was a risk I was willing to take and it paid off. My friend was using 20 pound tippet and lost two dolphins that day smaller than this one. One after touching the leader so a “catch”. The other broke when the fish got into the weeds.

It looks like a modified deceiver but what kind of feather is the eye attached to?

Nice fish and a good lookin fly. How big was that fish? I can see the 15wt but I am hopeful my 12 will suffice with some slingers.

Nice work!

very cool. Saw the article in the the paper
