Long week at work combined with a lousy forecast and I pretty much talked myself out of fishing on Saturday but I got a text late Friday night from Team Simple Interest. Said they were short handed and wanted to know if I could tag along for the tourney. After bribing the wife and throwing some gear in a bag I was off to sleep and ready for the 4am alarm clock.
Woke up and looked at the current conditions and was glad we were going to be fishing in a Freeman 42. It was going to be lumpy!
Met up with Roger, Todd, Brent, and Will, loaded the boat and we were off!
72 mile head sea, found my spot in the bean bag and took a nap. Woke up 20 miles from our spot to find a quite sporty ocean, Roger was telling jokes and spirits were high. We were running 25kts with the autopilot. Lets stretch her legs a bit and let her eat! Poured some coals to the yamahguchies and we were running 35kts. Don’t get me wrong had to drive her a bit but she didn’t fail to impress.
Lines in shortly afterward and we picked at the dolphin most of the day. Never found the tournament winner or had the all out fire drill, but we had fun pulling them off the teaser. Will and Brent had the hot hands for sure and ran the cockpit like a bunch of pros! Short flat was hot!
Found an insane rip at 2:15 and worked it hard until 3:00. Lines out for the tournament but we have nothing worth running to Bohicket with so decided to stay and troll.
3:45 Will grabs the short flat and yells got one on the teaser, drops it back and BAM got him on!! Pretty routine dolphin then what appeared to be a bomb went off under him! What the heck was that! Underestimate the dolphin or could it be the man?! The shimano hit another gear!
I talking about she was gonna come unglued!!
ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!!!
Our dolphin was no longer with us. He had been ate by one of those lunker class f
