Rolled outta Dewees around 6 with Andy Nelms, Trey Knott, Jay Brown, Lawson Mattson and my 7 year-old, “Big Game James”. Feasted on warm ham and cheese Hot Pockets at 31 knots. Started deploying the spread around the 226 hole and the starboard engine cuts out. Thinking about a long trip home, I continued to have trouble with the engine every time I put her in gear. Raised her up and had about 30 feet of 1/2 " nylon rope in the wheel. Cut both engines off and reeled in the lines when a nice sized bull follows our marlin lure all the way to the boat with a handfull of friends tagging along. He jumped on the lure and "Big Game James’ takes the 50 and puts the 21 lb. fish in the box while we are dead in the water. Left flat line is now wrapped under the starboard trim tab with a fish on while Lawton is draped across the engine cover surgically untangling the rope. We handlined 100 yards of line and gaffed a nice cow. Flying fish were everywhere and we were on a nice rip/ weedline in 74.5 degree water. Crushed the dolphin all morning and by noon had a box full with the biggest being Jay’s 46.5 lber. Pulled out the limes, tomatoes, purple onion and diced up some fresh ceviche served up with some XXX habenero hot sauce. Trolled off the weedline to shallower water and was summoned to a nice football field-size weed patch by Capt. Michael on “Can’t Complain”( Congrats on the two Blues!) Started bailing dolphin and casting the 8 pound spinning rod to 'em while passing the rods off to James. After an hour or so we decided to troll the line and within ten minutes, “Marlin!”. Hooked a small blue on the left short and he put on a show. After reeling all lines up and videoing about five to ten minutes of acrobatics, we started backing down on him. Getting into a rythym, Trey was steadily gaining line as we talked about jumping in with him and releasing him in the water … then Pop! the 80 lb flouro leader pops clean! Disappointed yet elated with the experience we pulled out the blender and served up some chilly frozen margarit
Awesome day! Congrats on a great day with friends and son. We are all greatly blessed!

The way Mel cooks, bartends and entertains, you can’t help but have fun, fish or no fish. Fortunately, the fishing was great too! Thanks Mel for a great day on the water!
