In 40 years I have never seen dolphin eating shrimp or had one run my poles. They eat fish. Have some of you guys trained them?

Dolphin eat the p*$$ out of shrimp, and yes, a rattle trap will scare them off.
But a bazooka will keep them from coming back next time!
Try a oldtimmy telephone! The magneto will get them every time. I’ve been told the will jump out of the water like catfish do. Love to see that!
I heard they don’t like metal any thoughts on that . And yes they had fun running my poles jumping and frolicking out of the water. Guess I have to find an old phone somewhere. Grew up in South Africa and we had one on the phone . If only I new back then .
Definitely illegal!

I’ve also heard gigging and/or harpooning them is an effective deterrent…

I have had good luck taking a cottet pin and putting it in the bait ball.I went from having flipper roll thru and all action shutting down to catching half worn down bait balls and a steady number of shrimp.People don’t give them the intelligence credit they deserve. I think to a porpoise a nice ball of bait binder or meal and clay is nothing more than a protein pudding snack.Just my opinion
so they eat baitballs? wow, the things you can learn on here

The dolphins in my opinion have a positive impact on shrimping. When we are shrimping and there are no dolphins we tend to catch a lot of Menhaden and Pin fish, but if dolphins are in the poles then the amount of fish we catch is greatly reduced. If they are reducing the amount of bycatch then it is less work for us. I know they are not eating the baitballs based on our unique baiting process we use. We have caught 2 & 3/4 coolers this year on three trips and in each scenario Dolphins were in our poles for the entire process.
I will continue to welcome dolphins running our poles.
Why would a dolphin eat a bait ball when its surrounded by a cloud of tasty shrimp? Scratching my head on that one

</font id=“quote”></blockquote id=“quote”>I don’t think they eat the baitballs. My last trip to BB they were everywhere. They were smacking their tails on the top of the water. Guess they were calling more of their buddies in. They were feeding everywhere and we were steady catching shrimp and an occasional bait ball. If they are there, you know the shrimp are there so bring 'em on!
