Don't you just love price gougers?

We have all been happy with the proliferation of the coin-operated, large bag ice machines all around the Low Country but I urge you all to boycott the one at Edisto Beach right by the BI-LO. What I was paying $1.75 a bag in town was $2.00 at Edisto . . . but in June it went up to $2.50 a bag. Now come on, a 25% increase over night . . . seriously? There is no way that price increase like that can be justified.

OK, I got it out of my system . . . yeah, I’m an old grouch too

I remember when it was a 1.50. Not to mention it doesn’t last long, more like buying a bag of slush

If it fly’s, floats, or, friggs, rent it!

Meh…you gotta figure someone has to get a return on investment. If machine owner was making enough to pay for the machine and some pocket change, his prices may have stayed the same. Maybe his Edisto machine is a income loser and he’s trying to save the machine from the repo man.

That’s just my guess.

I personally priced one of those setups… You’re talking about 120k to start. Not cheap. 2.50 is still cheaper than the gas station.

There are 2 machines there within 100yds of each other. One on the corner of jungle road and the other in front of BiLo. I guess when you’re down there you have to pay whatever they charge or drive 30 miles to Jacksonboro…

It’s either the best deal you can find or it isn’t. If I was selling all I could make at $2 a bag, I’d see what happened at $2.50. And I’d keep increasing it until I wasn’t selling all I could make. Then I’d back off. Nothing wrong with being a good businessman.

If you’re lucky enough to be fishing, you’re lucky enough.

Supply and demand. If it makes you feel better dont buy a 16lb bag and do the 20 lb bulk.

Here in Red Bank, I’m paying $2.00 for two 10lb. bags at one place and $1.75 for an 18lb. bag or 20lb. bulk at another.

There’s one about 2 miles from my house. I think it’s $2 for a 16lb. bag now. Still cheaper than the grocery store or convenience store. I usually buy 4 bags when I go there and put them in my freezer. That way they are frozen solid and last much longer.

P-Man, I wouldn’t get too hung up on the percentage increase. I haven’t been to Edisto in a while, but I would bet that 18/20 lbs for $2.50 is still the best deal on the island.

Would you seriously pay more at bi-lo or the BP just to protest the 25% increase at the machine?

You all make good rational comments - the problem for me was I wasn’t being rational . . . I was PISSED OFF

I hate going to what I think of as my “hometown beach” and feeling like a tourist :frowning:

Thanks for the kick in the seat . . . I’m back to normal now . . . whatever the hell that is

I saw a McDonald’s in Aiken the other day selling an 8lb bag for $1.00. Not sure if all of them sell ice or just in Aiken.

Its a lot cheaper if you don’t need it to be frozen. *pro tip

X2. Those things are not cheap. It’s $2 for an 18lb bag or 20lb bulk up here and like you said, it’s still cheaper than any gas station around for that amount of ice.

Anybody know a guy that used to say,“There’s no such thing as price gouging” and then proceed to tell stories of the price of ice after hurricane Hugo? Someone out there knows who I’m talking about…

It’s the beach. It’s the summer…“peak season”…everything is going to cost more. Have you ever complained as to why beach rentals cost more in the summer and twice as much the week of July 4th than it does for an October rental? Don’t want to pay $2.50 for a 20# bulk bag of ice? You can have gone to the gas station and paid $3.50 for a 10# bag. Just say’n…

Nice, I like it. Especially, the ice that previously had fish in it… DEEP discount…

Best thang to do to save the 50 cents is to spot a motel 6 on the way in, and liberate their ice for free…
