downrigger for kings?

Plan to fish for kings this summer in my 22 ft pathfinder bay.
Given the smaller size of my boat and design, I probably won’t be going offshore more than 10-12 miles and will choose the days wisely.

Recently bought a used cannon downrigger (lake and troll). Going to mount it using a rodholder adapter so I don’t have to mount the plate permanently on my rail.

If I can make it out to 60-70 ft of water to troll, what weight do I need to buy for the downrigger? I know they make 6, 8, 10 lbs and probably more.

What depth would you recommend if in 60-70 ft depth?

thanks!

I would use a big of weight as that downrigger will manage. Then put it about halfway to the bottom. You might be able to keep the bait away from the illusive BSB’s. I would also pull a stretch 25 on the opposite side. Kings love those things.

I would be delighted to see a king mackeral… I normally catch them in 90 to 110 feet of water anytime around june thru august. This past year I didnt see a single one, or very many pogies around. Any input on where they have been?

Bathroom.
