Downrigger/Mooching/Centerpin Reel Advice pls?

Have a nib Daiwa M-One Plus “Downrigger/Mooching” reel, aka ‘CenterPin’; 1:1 ratio, 7-disc drag, 520yds. 20# mono, a giant flyreel, Lol. http://www.daiwa.com/Reel/detail.aspx?ID=191

Have read a lot about ‘mooching’ technique for salmon/stripers w/ livebait on 10’ rods/light# line—just not into Far NW or GreatLakes at the moment, but since it is described as a ‘downrigger reel’ and I don’t have a Cannon et.al, how might I use this near/offshore Carolinas?

Advice pls on a rod/ spooling up, and how best I might use it as a downrigger set-up, or for jigging deep, maybe chunking for BA Sharks?

Thanks!

Throw the monster away! It will take your fingers off if not carefull!

BWAHHAAAAHA! Kinda what I was thinkin’! It does seem like a reel knucklebuster! Got no $$ in it, but I ain’t one to give up on a good lookin’ piece o’ gear just 'cause I got no idee to use fer it!

I might jus’ wanna go flyfishin’ for marlin, tho’–1/2 mile of 100#braid??:sunglasses:

in the meantime, might it werk on a 6’-7’ hvy. rod, 150# mono, w/ a 6# ball and a release, with which to troll for kings? meybe bottom-bumpin’ a chunk o’ whathaveyou in 80’ fer whatsabitin’?

Or meybe bling out my trailer winch on my Stratos??
Or winching up a well-bucket?? Shirley, daiwa designed this thang for some good use?

Let’s not be practical-- gimme ya’lls best ideas??

I think that setup would be great for free-drifting bait behind your boat when anchored on a nearshore reef. It would also work just fine with a sliding weight setup down at the jetties. If you don’t want it. I’ll take it!

Thank you NWTransplant!—being from the Great NW, you’ve probably done some moochin’??

So for ‘free-drifting bait while anchored’, what rod length/action and #test line would you suggest? This reel is a big ol’ fella!
‘They say’ that 1:1 gearing is a blast on big feesh?!

Would I put it on a 7’, 20-50# med.hvy spinning rod, say something like a Shakespeare Tiger Rod might work?

AND I’ll make you a deal—talk me thru this, I’ll give it a few tries, and If I don’t like it…Or it takes my fingers off…I’ll send it to you on my dime…assuming of course I am able to package it up with whatever finger-nubbins I might be fortunate to retain…

Seriously, Thank you Sir! I await your further considerations.
