Tons of info around about these things. I have one instead of a downrigger and have tied it to a cleat. I used 400lb mono but have read that braid would be better as far as getting it to cut through the water better. I’ve also read that braid isn’t good to use at all… who knows?
I don’t use a downrigger much, but when I did, I used the whole paper clip/rubber band thing. I just loop a rubber band around the line and slide it into the paper clip. Then I side the paper clip onto the z-wing mono and feed line out, watching it descend. I’ve seen lots caught off of downrigger setups, just not on my boat but I don’t think it is a z-wing mojo problem.
When I do use it, I kind of fret over the mono rubbing on the boat from the cleat. I’ve considered running the mono through a piece of tube to use it as a cushion kind of, but haven’t.
