I see that lots of folks here use downriggers. I never have and dont want to spend a ton of $. Looking for advice on what to buy to try to reach some deeper fish… Where I live usually fish 20-30 flats with ok success using deep divers. I do mark fish and catch on live bait in deeper 40-60 water. Just looking to troll some up on some hard plastic baits.
you can run lead core line or use something like dipsy divers to help get your lures down further

jsadler; go to w-marine , maybe even wally world ;; Attwood makes an economy priced “approx $40.00” downrigger that really works well down to 80-100ft. Comes complete with pivot base, wire ,and DR weight ball…The quick release clips for any of the DRs are a little pricey
though…good luck:smiley:

Hey thanks guys , that just may be the ticket
Thats it mechanic , I’ve got 2 of them and they work well for me , one turn of the hand wheel = 1 foot deep and so on… the price seems to have increased since i got mine , but that has been 6-8 years[:0]
Don’t know about you but I HATE lead core its a real PITA:frowning_face:

Huh … those actually look pretty cool …
Can you change out that wire cable for braid? If so that would be the 1st thing I did …
That wire hum is annoying …
… it’s my Wife’s fault we HAVE to fish !!!

GW, what speed are you going when using these?
Are you trolling some type of artificial or just using them to slow troll a live bait at the coast?

Lawcrusher is right ,the wire hum is annoying but I seldom troll fast enough for it to happen very often, i guess braid might work…I personally don’t like to use much/if any/ weight. When slow trolling live or arties , i free line one on top , one mid depth , one near bottom…speeds are usually slooow up to fast walk.
Striper i use basic method both salt and fresh , anywhere from kings in the salt, to cats and stripers in the sweet!!!

Yea, I can see them being OK for real slow like that, but IMO, a 4lb ball is just too light to be pulling deep as fish get on Murray in the summer at 2.5 mph or so to have any idea at all what depth the ball is at.
BTW, I normally don’t bother posting trolling reports as I don’t know of many others on this forum that troll with downriggers, but while we’re on the subject anyway, I have been going quite a bit in the late eve/early night and it is very good right now.
Trolling with spoons before dark and plugs after. Fishing 65-70 early on and then many fish been moving up to 50-60 after dark.

Tim, I heard the trolling bite has been pretty good. I know the spoon bite has been unreal… With all the lack of fish eating live bait I have pulled my downriggers out the closet and dusted them off…lol…they usually get out once every other year or so…
With the trolling reports I have been getting at the hill we are headed down there tomorrow with spoons and plugs…should be interesting.
Since the boat will be loaded for trolling, good possibility I will be on Murray Sunday trolling as well.

I see used units all over the net for sale cheap! A guy gave me a new set of cannons last year that came with the boat he bought and didn’t want! Run them a good bit offshore but have lost to much stuff pulling in the lakes! Those big u rigs are not cheap!
I bought some fish seeker diving planer boards but I guess i am going too fast because they keep coming up… Still think im gonna get a down rigger
I just got the Cannon downriggers that hold up to 8# ball. I felt 4# wasn’t enough for 2.5mph speeds. I’m going to pick up some spoons and plugs and also try yumbrellas when they come in. I’ll let you know this weekend hopefully. I loved the $60-$70 price tag but I feel like spending the extra $70 to have a higher quality, stronger DR will more than pay for itself later on.
