Downtown Columbia Stripers

Went striper fishing 1015-1230 or so today under Gervais street bridge with one of my roomate. We both had Long As his blue and white, mine green and white, both 5 inches. He had one good hard bite on his second cast but it spit the bomber out pretty quick beacuse he hadn’t set his drag yet. Didnt have a single bite after that. Fished the flats above the rapids, in the rapids, below the rapids…everywhere. waded out almost to the middle of the river. Caught a few small mouth the other day on the other side. One of us will be going almost every day if anyone wants to head out. Anyone have any tips on anything else to use? DNR says cut bait isnt productive yet

If you’re fishing artificials just experiment as much as possible. You never know what’s going to work.

There was a time when I couldn’t buy enough Rainbow Trout colored Long A’s. I wasn’t losing them, they were falling apart from so many hits and catches. I haven’t had much luck at all with those the last couple of years.

I like soft plastic jerkbaits lately. Also big chugbaits worked really well last year. Creek Chubs with a silver body and a black head were especially productive.

But the key is to try everything. If you get too addicted to one bait you’re cheating yourself.

I would also throw out cut bait. You can have it out there while fishing lures. Can’t hurt

Does anyone know if you can find out when the downtown dam by gervais street opens??

What do you mean by Downtown Dam? The water coming out of the canal? If so, I’ve never heard of a schedule being publically posted for that one.

yea the canal. i heard there was a website but havent found it

Good luck. I can’t help you with that one.

the canal is owned by the drinking water treatment facility. the hydro plant/dam at the south end is also owned by the city, but is operated under a long-term license by SCEG. my understanding is it’s a constant release. the only site that would post a schedule would be sceg, if there is one.

That was my original thought as well. I do think the flow varies though. But that could be a function of water level in the canal.
