Last year I thought of asking the local flyfishing community if they wanted to designate a “Learning Flat”. There are numerous requests that state the same basic request: “Hey guys”…“I am new to the sport/area”… or “I have been flyfishing all my life BUT, not in saltwater”…“I don’t want your honey-hole”… “I’m willing to put in the effort”… “I don’t have a boat right now”…
Most of them I think are ‘trolls’ or are made by people who really DON’T want to “put in the effort”. But, if there is a guy who wants to become one of us, I’m always willing to help.
Here are some pros and cons of a “designated learning flat” that I have thought about.
Pro; Gets the “Hey, I don’t want your honey-hole” guys to put up or shut up.
Pro; Keeps people from “leaking” or “hinting” or “spilling” spots that could be sensitive to pressure by people who are just learning.
Pro; Gives the opportunity of a group discussion of what this flyfishing community is trying to accomplish and prevent/preserve in our local waters.
Pro: Etc…
Cons: A flat could receive too much traffic: The flat that I am thinking about… I doubt it. And from the actual number of people I think that will put in the require effort… I doubt it.
Cons: DNR might say that ALL of us should get the F-out of the marshes.
Cons: The guys that worry about their “special” spots could “learn the guys” how to protect the flyfishing fishery.
Cons: Etc…
The flat I am thinking about is a great flat with lots of room and I have already told people to go there if they want to learn how to “walk a flat”. I don’t think ANY of them EVER showed up on the flat. But, I have talked to a couple guys who found the flat by themselves and they like it.
My motivation is just to weed through the requests and see if both sides of the equation want to have a meeting of the mind? Don’t ask me “what flat”? That is a separate discussion.
