Hey guys… Been fishing for awhile, and Im just now getting into fly fishing. Caught a several fresh water blue gill and one small bass while practicing my cast the other day. I would love to get a chance to throw some on a salt water flat… Not asking for your honey hole but I would love some insight on locations around james and johns island I could drive too. Thanks for you help
From my understanding Fish whistle, you probably won’t be seeing any fish on “walk to flats” during the winter, they may be there but you wont see them to due to them not tailing …
Bragging may not bring happiness,
but no man having caught a large fish,
goes home through the alley.

the only flats i know of like that are on the way to folly beach you’ll see em at low tide but i always thought the fish would be too scared to tail. their is also a pretty large flat off sol leagare road. if you would be willing to talk to backmans seafood or a landowner their may be a good school
A small fish in hand is better than big fish in promise
You will still find fish on your summer walk-to fltas but Hurricane is right very rarely will you see them tailing…they are there. They are just laid up soaking up some sun and hiding from flipper. It is harder to find them but they will be there.

Yakman, I hope those weren’t some of your favorite spots, because plugging them on the interwebs is a sure way to ruin them. I learned that valuable lesson years ago.
A long long slow walk in the spartina gives you time to think big thoughts and put your mind back into order.

What I’m trying to say is that information like that may be better shared through a private message. Besides, it may be someone else’s “honey hole”.

Quick question for you. Which of the following items are still being made:
Fly fishermen
Flats the are good for wading
Ok good. Now grab a calendar and highlight all the days between may and November where a 6’ tide falls during daylight hours. Now check it against your work schedule. Circle the free dates that you may get, out of the entire year, out on a flooded flat. Now go back to question one. With a very finite resource and a very limited time of usability, is it really in your best interest to run your mouth on an open Internet forum about places to wade? We all share common interests and a lot of us are good fellows to hang around with, but here’s not more than a half dozen of you that I would be glad to see as I arrive on my home flat an hour before the tide gets right.
You’re getting a big pro tip to keep your mouth shut about drive to flats that you can wade unless you enjoy watching other people fish.

The fishing is easy this winter. All you have to use is a 2 post FishWistle.

Wow! really got things stirred up! Thanks for all the advice. I know asking for spots is the taboo question, but i dont have any friends who throw the fly around. Dont worry about your spots guys
Just trying to get into the sport…
You will learn that duck hunters and feather throwers keep spots very close. Yes, they might not be “secret” but most of them they were found after a lot of footwork and that’s what makes them valuable. Very few spots stay good very long after they are broadcast to every lurker on this fishing site.
If you want some advice, get on Google Earth and look for potential places. Once you have located a few, do some footwork at low and high tides. Stay away from the really green grass unless you want to sink to your armpits in the mud. Look for the short yellow grass and that’s usually where the fish are found. Not every flat will have fish every time so don’t get discouraged, just keep trying. Most of all, be courteous. If there is someone out on “your” flat, make sure you don’t interfere with their walk. If it’s big enough, and that judgement is best made if the positions were reversed, then fish. If not, move on.
thanks flats, I’m more depressed now than I was before I read your scheduling post…
“The good fisherman is surprised when he doesn’t catch fish: I am just the other way around.”
Gene Hill, Passing a Good Time.
If I can talk to you above a whisper and you can hear me you’re to close, unless we rode together, then your still to close. If my fly can touch your fly, your to close …
