Fished this Wed. AM and picked up 3 just keepers and several shorts. All when Drumming.
Seen others drumming/thumping and wondered how many do it? What is your technique? And am I the only one who thinks it works.
I normally only Drum when anchored, and in water under 60’ and I use a slow steady beat.
I think sharing ideas on catching Stripers can only promote the sport, and do not understand the idea of keeping secrets.
Steve, you use a rubber mallet? I’ve stomped on more than a few empty beer cans while fishing, but haven’t tried going out of my way to make noise.
Do you do it any time you are anchored or only when you are markimg fish that won’t bite? Seems like it could get old pretty quick. I’ve never tried it, but may give it a try in the morning.
I just started this, this year. I felt it would get old fast, but all fish caught today was when Drumming. I just drop the butt end of a fishing pole on an area of the boat which soulds hollow. Seems to bring them in even when not making any.
I use the end of a boat paddle. Slow, then fast, alternating. I use it when the fish are down 40 ft and wont hit. I have had alot of results using this technique. I must say I was a doubter at first. It does seem hokie. I do know that if you jump into the water and splash around, the fish come up too. I’ve done this several times. It works, and you get cooled off to boot. I’ve had fish schooling up next to the boat right along with the kids. Its crazy !! We sold the ski boat, so we havent done this lately.
YES…It works…
Went out on a “guided” trip on Friday…When the fish would move off, the Capt. would start to drum and the fish would come right back…
5 people and 25 fish later in 2 1/2hrs…I’d say YES IT WORKS…
Mackee1 – thanks for the info. Looks like I need to book a trip with a guide (guessing Harold) to find out 1. How to drum, 2. Where to drum, 3. How to catch fish like you reported. Much better results than I had Sat.
Drumming is not rocket science. I got frustrated when I caught few fish in the morning, then went home dropped off the fishing boat, picked up the ski boat, kids jumped into the water, started slashing, then up come the stripers schooling. Of course I didnt have any rods. Thats when I learned. If you see the fish on the finder and they wont hit, do a little drum roll on the floor. Some say on the back of a seat is a sweet spot. Of course having very lively bait is a must for triggering a strike. The guides seem to have lots of bait available all the time. They sometimes have too much and chum the fish into activity. I’m too cheap to buy extra bait. I’ve also been right next to the guides and they are reelin them in and I’m not getting any hits. When in doubt, chum um and drum um. It really works.
