A friend wants me to check with y’all about storage on a Carolina skiff. He has a older Mckee craft that leaks into his storage. He is looking for a newer n different boat. He also complains about the amount of storage, says there isnt enough.Hope that y’all can help him.
On the DLX models there’s plenty of storage up under the front deck, but it’s not easy to get to stuff that is not close to the access holes in the boat. I built a hatch on the top deck that allows me to have easy acess to the entire area under the deck. I also got mine without any built in bait tank in the back and built in a water tight storage for wallets, keys etc… back there. Depending on what size fuel tank you get, there is also a good amount of space in the front of the center console that is not accessible. I put a hatch on the front of the console, below the front seat, as well for access to that space and now have plenty of storage. Probably more than most in the 19’ size range.
I am currently in a “refit mode” on my boat and have been able to build a number of dry storage areas for cell phones, wallets, keys etc out of 4" Bomar screw on deck plates and 4"pvc. To attach the plate to the pipe use a section of 4" butt connector (you don’t need the whole thing…just about 1 1/2 inches). PVC glue the connector to the pipe and plate…a few stainless screws for reassurance, cut the pvc pipe to the desired length needed and place a butt cap on other end. A 5 inch hole saw is needed to accomodate the extra thickness at the plate created by the butt connector. You have to use your imagination and ingenuity to mount these things, but with some starboard, fiberglass, screws, and 5200 they turn out really well.
Thanks guys. Does anyone have any other ideas for a boat with lots of storage. He doesnt nessasary want a carolina skiff. He carries about 5 life jackets, several tackle boxes and etc. tools, shrimp nets, anchorn lots of riope. Mainly fishes broad river and surrounding creeks. So need a boat that will get in skinny water.
