Dual battery question

In a setup with dual batteries linked by a switch, what’s the main purpose of this arrangement? Backup battery? Additional juice for accessories? When running under normal conditions, should the switch always be on a single battery, both batteries? Pardon my ignorance, I’m just making sure I’m handling everything correctly. The boat doesn’t have any major charge drainers other than a cd player, livewell pump, and running lights and i assume these run primarily off the motor alternator when the engine is in use. Any insight would be appreciated. I just want to make sure i don’t neglect one of the batteries due to lack of use and it slowly degrades over time. Thanks

LOL – yeah, that’s simple…

FWIW, I usually start off on one battery and use it while out. If I stop to swim, party, whatever, I’ll stay on that battery. When anchor’s up, I’ll switch over to the other one and use it for the 2nd half of the day.

I never run on both, and rarely crank on both.

Some people crank on one, and run on the other. Some always crank and run on both. You’ll get a different answer from about everyone.

Bottom line, use one battery at a time and alternate between the two.
