Is it possible to get more HP out of 94 200 Mercs?
I know nothing about outboards, can you bore and stroke them like a car engine?

I don’t know for certain on that motor, but I would think not. The limiting factor will be the exhaust flow throught to the bottom. Usually can’t do much with increasing the capacity.
Bring on the 2-3 chop!
Yes you can “soup” these motors up, but than you start trading economy, and relieabilty. The exhaust is not a problem, you can cut it out, but than its really loud. I’ve built several motors, and tried alot of different things. Some builders say the exhaust is not a problem, if you have enough HP and flow, it will find a way out, others disagree. Simple “tricks” I’ve seen over the years are removing the head gaskets, and increasing fuel. The only TRUE way to get more HP out of a normally asperated engine is more displacement and a lot of fuel and air.

Just repower,it will be cheaper in the long run…
yes, they can be “hopped up”, horse power available is directly relavent to how much you want to spend, and you’ll have to spend big to make a difference. You best bet on that Scarab would be to find a pair of drop on power heads of higher hp(240-260). Don’t forget to upgrade the steering while you are at it.

With bolt on parts you can easily and fairly inexpensively up your hp by 25-30 %. However, doing it to 15 year old engines, might be a little risky.
Nothing like the smell of melted pistons first thing in the morning.
mercury is pretty easy to get more hp out of.
like PK said, bolt on parts, but what kind of performance numbers are you expecting. you can easily spend a few thousand dollars to get a 2-3 mph increase

I spent less than a grand and got almost 10 more mph out of a Yam 90 on my flats boat …
What would be the most common thing to do without a teardown and boring with higher compression pistons? Carb work? larger jets? Proping? Ignition system?
Rick
jets, exhaust tuner, reeds are the easiest.

on light boats, with small hp, its easy to get those kind of increases, based on hp to weight ratio changes.
on a big heavy boat with TWIN engine, you arent going to see that kind of increase, without major changes in HP, plus everything costs twice as much.
we repowered a boat for towboat
it had twin f115’s
we put twin f150s
it went from a 33mph top end with a cruise in the low 20’s
to a WOT almost 50, and a 30mph cruise speed, at lower rpms.
those are the exceptions, as opposed to the rules

I’ve been on your boat… don’t mess with it!
Run them till they blow, then repower…
There is twin 275 Verado’s for $11k on craigslit that will get you where you wanna be.
Just to give you some backround on why he is pissed…
It broke his pour hart when he couldn’t keep up with an old Trophy running the ICW last week…![]()
When we got to the bar… all i heard was… i need more speed… WTF… Phuck that boat… Race Hull my A$$.
He needs exactly 51 mph to make him happy…
Lets just go to the ocean in 3-4’ seas and race to build your ego back up and be done with it,or re-prop with no whole shot.

when you did the upgrades, did you do it all at once?
I have always heard the fiber reeds give you better low and mid range, but dont help much with WOT, and havent ever done just reeds to get real numbers.
we have installed alot of fiber reeds, but always with other stuff, and was just wondering???
I’m now at www.teamcharlestonmarine.com
my experiance has been the fiber reeds kill the bottom end, the two stage help, but generally its mid range on up. Realisticly, the main reason we recomedned them on high performance motors was in case you broke a reed, teh fiber reeds will just go thru the motor, no damage, I’ve seen some high dollar champ motors trashed because of a broken reed.

The only reason you had me was i had was the 3 fat bastards and the half full keg on the same side of the boat (had a tab down).
I still can’t figure out how the hell you trimmed the motors enough to spray that much ■■■■ water in my boat… at 50 deg!!!
After some more research, i decided to just repower. A 45 mph Scarab is just not going to get it done.
Dealing with a mechanic to see if the 275 Verado’s will hang on the transom without to much extra work.

watch your weight, one verado with all the gear weighs just a little more than both of your 2.4 motors/ You might want to check into the new light weight Yamahas 4 stroke motors. Personally, the best set up would be a pair of the merc 250Xs, more fuel efficent, lighter than the verados, and priced far better that any of the 4 strokes.

I don’t know what 275 Verados would do for your scarab, but they move my 31 fountain around about 65-67mph.
