Dump Comcast Cable TV?

I am wondering if anyone has had any success by doing this.
It seems tempting; but it looks to me like the savings realized may be largely off set by the services -Netflix etc.- one needs to buy to stream TV.
Also, appears one has to go to many different sources to find programs to watch.
May have to buy additional hardware/software to configure current computer/TV setup?
Any ■■■■■■■■-much appreciated!

Who are you going to go to Direct TV, Time Warner, good luck!http://money.cnn.com/2014/02/13/technology/comcast-time-warner-cable-deal/

Comcast seems to be following me south, started with them in the 90’s back in Philly, then DE, then MD - didn’t even mess with them once we got here. They were never a good company.

We now have direct TV - 5 TV’s linked to one DVR, 2 TV’s can watch different recorded stuff at once, all 5 can watch any show they want live. The DVR is great - records tons of stuff, series are done automatically, holds tons of HD movies and shows… and it connects to the internet for Ytube and other stuff.

We get all local shows, basic cable stuff, fishing channels and HBO.

On demand is great - can watch any old shows each network makes available.

Sometimes we lose signal in heavy rain - and to add a TV, you need to get another communications box setup.

Its still expensive - 180 per month, so we are considering going the netflix route…

For Netflix you need home internet service - $20-30 per month.
Netflix for $12 per month (I think)
A wireless router.
Some device (DVD player) or TV with wireless router at each viewing location, or you need to pull ethernet cables all over the house.
Then you are limited to what the networks load on netflix.
-You don’t get live local or world news.
-You don’t get live sports.

You can watch HD TV with an HD antenna for free.

Netflix and Hulu are about $8/month each.

We did this in my house for about two years when we went through a budget crunch. It worked fine, and there is so much stuff to watch online! You still have to have high speed internet to stream stuff, though.

I’m using AT&T Uverse now. My wife has to keep up with the housewives and Kardashians, and I love my NFL network and ESPN.

*Edit: I use an old xbox 360 to stream Netflix and Hulu. They’re probably pretty cheap on craigslist.

Great, with Comcast and TW combining, they will now have more “Screw You” power.

We switched from Comcast to Uverse two years ago. Never looked back. Service, when rarely needed, was quick.

I had TWC in Columbia in college and got Comcast when i came back to chas. Had Comcast for about 2 years, picture quality is good in HD but other than that not very impressed. Outdated interface, our internet was slow (possibly from using supplied router possibly from being on a poulated street). We got an offer to get the same channels plus movie channels from ATT and a locked in rate of about $120/month for the next 8 years (i do have to call in a promo code every january to keep my rate). The DVR is sooo much better, the interface is much nicer, the internet is way faster. No complaints as of yet so i would highly suggest it. Also when comcast was out a couple weeks back for the ice storm ATT never skipped a beat.

Similar to Hoof, we dropped cable a couple years back. We already had the high-speed internet, so we picked up a Roku box for each TV, then subscribed to Hulu+ and Netflix (each about $8/month). The kids weren’t too happy at first, but have since discovered more than enough shows to watch. I miss ESPN, but I get the main networks through the air, so I can still see a bit of live sports.

At the same time we dropped our local only phone service and went with a VOIP service. Only $30/year with unlimited long distance/local, plus all the other bells/whistles.

Too frequent outtages and the bill is steep but haven’t found a better alternative yet.

They can’t screw someone that doesn’t have it. I grew up having cable, but I have not had cable since 2001, and have never missed it. The time I regained in my life from not watching cable has been priceless.

If you don’t mind a little unsolicited opinion…not everything on cable it crap, I know. Some good and useful stuff (sports, weather, etc), but the vast majority of it is just an untalented waste of time. Every time I spend a weekend visiting family, I surf the channels. Deeply unimpressed.

We do grudgingly use Netflix, and I rent videos on Google Play. I think we spend, maybe, $20/month total on a bad month. Just keep in mind that Netflix is basically the place where poorly done sequels and “made for TV” movies all go to die.

Thanks for all your responses, most helpful.
Guess I will stay with C’Cast; I am getting lazy in my old age and just don’t want to go thru the hassle of re-configuring my systems one more time!

I could just about do away with TV all together if it weren’t for college football. No ESPN would make me sad. Sucks to have such limited options. I looked into U-Verse but have heard nothing good here in Cola. My neighbors have it and I see an AT&T truck over there every couple of months. They say it is great when it works.

D, I have heard the same thing in Cola and have seen the repeat visits of the truck to the neighbors. It appears they went after business with an incomplete system and untrained employees. Captain hears a lot of bad news at work all with the same story. I hate to hear the merger will happen as they will shove the price up our butt.

Haven’t had cable in over 7 years. Never miss it. We have Netflix, and I pay for the basic 9 channels just to get local news weather, and a few shows. Mainly Shark Tank and The Goldbergs.

For all my other shows I buy them on Itunes and watch them through my Apple TV. Walking Dead and SOA are about the only ones I pay for. Other than that Netflix has enough old episodes to keep us busy. For internet and Netflix I pay $78 a month. We over pay for internet, but we don’t have any other options except for AT&T DSL. Which I am about to give a try if TWC goes up one more time.

My dad pays $180 a month and I can’t understand the ROI. For $78 a month we have more than we could ever watch.

For the sporting events I can’t live without, or watch at a friends or bar. I use my Apple TV and the ESPN app and login with my dads account. Not ethical I know, but they have screwed me for so many years whats watching 2-3 football games a year going to hurt.

We dumped Comcast for ATT. Saved about 70 bucks a month, but wife had me disconnect 2 of my man cave TV’s. No complaints yet. Now I have hundreds of channels with garbage programming ! But we get Starz and Showtime so I have been following “Black Sails” which is a pretty cool pirate series.
