I was waiting on my boat owner to return to the ramp with his trailer so we could take his boat out of the water when a couple of guys in a pick up truck without a tailgate backed down the ramp and started throwing about a dozen or so dolphin carcasses in the water at the ramp.
When they were done, they rinsed their hands and drove away, leaving the carcasses only in a foot or 2 of water at mid-tide. I don’t think they were too concerned with getting the carcasses out to deeper water, they were more concerned about getting rid of the fish and getting out of the area.
Hopefully the current washed the carcasses off the ramp before low tide.
Understandably, several by standers were pretty appalled. I guess the kayakers and paddle boarders will enjoy the nice squishy fish when they portage the ramp.
I’ve tossed my few fish heads at the ramps, but I’ve always taken the trouble to at least get to deep water and not dump my stuff where it’ll be high and dry to stink up the place at low tide.
Shame on you guys.

So it is ok to throw them deeper?

The offshore charter boats toss their carcasses in deep water with out complaining by me, but charter boats don’t dump their carcasses on the ramps.

even if you dump a carcass deep - it will float up soon unless you puncture the eyes. Many marinas have mates that take carcasses out of the area and dump them where they wont cause any trouble. There are plenty of critters that feed on the scraps.
The DNR rule that requires us to land fish with head and tail intact is the major driver on this. It would be so nice to clean the fish and through the scraps out in the harbor on the way home. I know throwing fish carcasses in the trash at home can make for some ripe smells real quick like in a hurry.
Give them to the local crabbers. You will make friends. Also, carcasses make for fine fish stew. Grouper cheeks are to die for. Very few leftover fish guts last long in the marsh. The landing is not the place to do it though. Or at least take it out to the end of the dock when you do it.
Umm, you gonna eat that?

I always try to return unused fish parts, carcasses, bait, etc to the water. There’s lots critters that will feed on them and it helps the entire food chain.
Would much rather do that (even if it’s a little inconvenient by having to make an extra trip by a creek or bridge) than feeding the birds and worms at the landfill.
Kinda what I was thinking? Those carcasses want be there long. Last guided trip I took was out of Morehead City, NC. When we got back to the dock to clean the fish, every last piece went right over the edge at the private ramp. Shallow water. Before we finished cleaning all the fish crabs had already started their due diligence
