Dynamite Hole

My brothers are coming to visit for the next 2 weeks and I want to take them and our kids out to catch some bigger fish. Has the dynamite hole been productive for anyone? Or maybe some other places to try in the harbor or near JI or Folly?

Also, if the dynamite hole has been good, what depths would I expect to find there? How much anchor line do you think I would need?

check some of Capt Fritz’s posts in the inshore forum and on Facebook with his big reds caught this summer…and last summer…and the summer before that…

Bottom of " hole" 50’. Easily found on your DS.

Thanks for the info. Can I anchor in shallower water near and still fish the bottom of it?

Sure. Just stop upwind/ up current, anchor, drift back.
Others may chip in, but the deepest area seems like flat bottom mostly with little structure.
If you have/ get an iPilot, then just “anchor” wherever you want. I’m not there much but usually anchor on the dropoff closer to the rocks.

Keep in mind their is a very strong current running through dynamite hole. I find it is best to fish it an hour or maybe two before or after slack tide. You need at least one crew member with you for anchor duty. When the current starts rolling you need to drive up on your anchor while the other guy takes up the line. It can be hairy so be careful.

Be careful anchoring there. I got hung up one time and thought I’d never get my anchor back.

For a first time, I would try closer to the visible jetties, watch your sonar to avoid anchoring on the rocks below. You can anchor in 20-25 feet depths, just be cautious of the current, waves, wakes from ships and a drifting anchor. It is an easier scope of rope compared to a 50 foot depth which might require 200-300 feet of rope. The current during peak flow makes for a demanding retrieval of everything. And avoid the breakers just south of the jetties, you won’t notice them if approaching from the west on a southwest wind, been there, done that.
A very good place to wear a life jacket, many accidents in that area.
