My boss & I were probably the only 2 out there this a.m. that weren’t in the tourny. It was our first try plus we had to be back by 10 a.m. We got out of the jetties @ 6 and trolled 3 ballahoo (one on a 4 oz in-line sinker; one with just a 1 oz lead head on the nose hook; one up top in the wash). The first 40 mins we couldn’t find any sign of life until finally the menhaden were exploding about a mile out on the north side of the channel… but couldn’t see what was stirring the pot. Trolled for several hours following the bait… no joy. If anyone had any luck then please post pics! And if you don’t mind… what depth were you fishing and what depth did you have your lines out.
We trolled the tideline around the shiping channel on the way out with no luck yesterday.
Did get one 25# on live manhadden in 65’ of water
yes, they did have the tournament and a 41 lber won…we caught our fish very late and after a white knuckled bone crushing back breaking ride in we were 7 minutes late to weigh in…turns out it wouldn’t have placed anyway…I believe 5th place was 26+
Thanks for the report guys. Billyhoo, what depth were your lines at? FishB8, I feel your pain. I was so ■■■■ excited all week long and didn’t even get a hit. Bait was every where but it was small menhaden… guess if it were bigger bait then there would’ve been more hope drawn in. Striperskiff, nothin’ wrong with a 25#… good job! We got bounced around a bit in my little boat (17ft Scout) just a few miles out… turned out that it wasn’t worth my time.
If anyone else had any luck this weekend… go ahead and let us know! Thanks!
we fished the tourny as well and didnt even get a king either. we did catch a 17.3lbs gag in 60’ on the down rigger with a ribbon fish. we finally called it and went home around 4 we had enough.
Well hopefully next weekend will be a little better… as for boat traffic, it might not even be worth going out. Probably will try just spoons next time and hold off on trolling with rigs. I’m still pretty shocked that not many people had much luck with kings this weekend. Good luck to everyone on the next trip out & thanks for all of the good ■■■■■■■■.
Well think that the weather had alittle role init. There were some pretty big waves in the area that we first fished and then some big stuff in the shipping chanel later on that afternoon.
Yeah, we had a 29lber caught on a pogie on the shotgun. Lost power on the center engine a few miles out from the jetties and missed weigh in by seven minutes. Just one of those things that could not be avoided. All the guys pulled together to try and make it happen but no dice. Tournament kingfishing is truly a team sport. I fish with Team Gas Money and could not ask for better group of guys. We’ll be ready for the next one.
