I saw the city is planning on closing the East Bay Park boat ramp later this year to do $740,600 worth of repairs and improvements. They say the ramp is rarely used due to it being in disrepair. What? I know the steel “wall” part is a little sketchy, but I’ve used a lot worse boat ramps.
They are going to add docks that are more suitable for non-motorized water craft such as kayaks and paddle boats. They are going to replace the steel pilings with plastic ones and re-do the concrete pad.
Disrepair? I’m trying to think of the real reason they are doing this. Anyone have any ideas?
Try finding a city planner or a friend of a city planner, buy drinks, lots of drinks and hope he gets loose lips… I am like you when I hear them close ramps and such it makes you wonder if it will ever stay a ramp or get used in some other way and then the community may lose valuable infrastructure.
We use EB all the time when heading offshore. They just want to close it to force people to actually used the Campbell Ramp. Spent all that money and most people still use EB.

poor timing to close a ramp fall fishing and shrimp baiting season. Plus Carrol Campbell ramp is half closed for now hopefully dosen’t get worse than it already is. If so we will all be out of luck at the best time of the year.

I’m tired of being told that I have to “spread the wealth” to people who don’t have my work ethic. I’m tired of being told the government will take the money I earned, by force if necessary, and give it to people too lazy to earn it. I think I’m going fishing…!!
Sent an e-mail to one of the City Council members. I urge everyone that uses EB to go on the City Council page and look up a member and send them an E-mail to change this.

EDIT: I just got a reply email from City Council member.
“The county owns the C. Campbell landing. The city owns the one at East Bay. The city is going to upgrade and landscape it sometime after the summer. I asked the city to hold off until the fall but they said it would begin in August. I asked them to do one lane at at time and they said they were on a time schedule and I told them to be prepared for multiple phone calls.”

I use EB too. I’ve never even used the other because it’s further and I like using the EB ramps except for having to watch my open array with the trees.

A few years ago there was talk about revamping EB park with boardwalks connecting to Gtown marina, historic center/ tower, new fields, increase green space, tie in more to Morgan Park, etc… Part of the proposal was to close the landing to motorized boats, ie, kayaks and canoes only. I was living on Front St near the park at the time and everyone downtown raised hell about closing the landing and the additional traffic all the other changes would create. I expect that to happen again if they revisit talks about closing the landing. Like others have said, besides the damaged steel walls, there’s nothing wrong with the landing. Put the heat on Flip and I’ll have some talks with Mr. Mayor.
Sent Jack an email last night and here is his response. I asked in another email when and for how long.
“We are doing a major upgrade. It will be closed while some of the work is done but no changes will be made to usage. There are safety concerns besides appearance. That is a major tourist spot so we think it needs to look good. A lot of the money is coming from grants.”
The city is getting ready to do a $700,000 make over to the landing. It has nothing to do with the CC landing. East Bay is probably used ten times more than CC. I don’t know who starts all of the rumors but what you heard is false. I asked the city to wait until Sept. before beginning but they said due to some grant money they received, they have to begin in Aug. I asked them to at least keep one lane open while the the work is being done and they said to no to that also. I told them to be prepared for a lot of phone calls.

That money has a expiration clause on it…if so much has not been spent by X-Date, no more will be issued or no more NEXT TIME… Standard operating procedures for the GOV.
