To start with, I’m not bashing dog hunting in any way! In fact, I enjoy the heck out of it and it’s sad to see the sport on the decline. Reason for my post is I joined a well known club on 17a behind the old Westvaco office. The club advertised still hunting only since they had lost their dog hunting rights as all East Edisto leases with Plum Creek has. They have every Sunday blocked for an “organized man drive day”. I wasn’t thrilled about this, but was willing to give it a try. Well, come to find out the old members have still been dog hunting every Sunday and holiday. When I asked about it I was told to “get over it, your a first year member”! Now, I am open minded and don’t want to step on any toes but this seems like a violation of their lease agreement and very dishonest to the new members who joined an advertised still hunting only club. I also asked who the lease was through since Plum Creek was bought by Weyerhaeuser but was told that it was none of my business. Am I out of line to be upset?
If you like the hunting there - I’d let that dog sleep!
If Weyerhaeuser finds a club hunting with dogs that is not supposed to they will lose their lease. Most all dog hunters I’ve met on now Weyerhaeuser property are first notch. We’ve only had one nasty issue and one call was all it took to end their hunting rights on the property. Let a hunter get in the way of Timber harvest and trust me the hunter loses. Also it’s a big public opinion thing. Let dog hunters stray on adjacent property with a few JUSTIFIED complaints (they do get looked into as they know a lot just like to stir crap over dog hunting) and the tract will go to strickly still hunting. Weyerhaeuser like Plum creek and westvaco before like to keep a good public image.
If Weyerhaeuser does like Plumb Creek you probably won’t see many food plots. Plumb Creek was assessing charging each club for what the plot would produce if planted in timber, which would equate to a very expensive food plot! I’ll ask around and see if I can find out Weyerhaeuser’s policy on it. Don’t be surprised to see them ban all dog hunting in the near future… They have done it in other states due to not wanting to deal with public ■■■■■.
The next five years will be real interesting for the future of dog hunting statewide . IMO. The rogue hunters have really brought some negative attention to the sport along with the new age of still hunting. Running “big” dogs on very small tracks that “little” beagles would be perfect for has also been bad for public opinion. The old excuse of dogs don’t know property lines is worn out.

Thanks for the replies. I’m only assuming that Weyerhaeuser is the owner through research since the president refuses to share any information. I’d hate for the innocent members to lose their lease but I don’t take too kindly to being ripped for $950. The guy hasn’t left me with any options other than calling Weyerhaeuser. As far as liking the property, I think it has a lot of potential. Plenty of deer, but they quickly become nocturnal after being run with dogs every weekend. Also, they coon hunt several times a week so that doesn’t help! If anyone knows of a still hunting club around 1hr from Summerville that may be taking members next year let me know!
If that club is close to hwy. 165 and has a couple ponds close to the club house then it was more than likely the same club I belonged too for a year. I had a game cam, feeder and ladder stand stolen and another ladder stand was run over by a truck. Then to top it all off the dog drivers started putting trash on my corn piles… I left and never looked back. If your a dog hunter it was a good club to shoot anything that moved on it but that wasn’t what I was looking for and unfortunately they sold it then as mostly a still hunting club with dog drive areas.

Flat Bottom, I think that’s a different club. This one is on 17a across from clubhouse road. They have ponds but they’re all along the main highway. I do hate that these guys lost their rights to dog hunting out there, but rules are rules. Besides, it’s stuff like this that will do away with dog hunting everywhere. On another note, if anyone knows of a real still hunting club within one hour of Summerville looking for members next year let me know. Thanks and have a happy new year!
I say let it rest. Find another club.

I know people shouldn’t get in everyone else’s business, but if you know someone’s doing wrong don’t we have a moral obligation to bring it to light?
I’d drop a silent dime on em.
live and let live
Im not saying the club is right. They will not get away with it for long. I would be pissed also if I were in your shoes. But I would try to have another conversation with the president and other members.
Dog hunting has been around a long time and is a big part of tradition here. I belong to a club that was dog hunted longer then most people have been alive. It is still hunting only now. Many origional members left, but took a few years to replace them with good people.

Loopervet I agree. I’ve tried the passive approach but it just doesn’t work with these guys. Main thing is I don’t want to possibly be blackballed from Weyerhaeuser leases for being a part of violating the lease agreement. I would have joined a different lease had I known upfront that they did this, but to take money from people based on one set of rules and then doing the complete opposite is just wrong.
Burn them down. You’ll find another club or the land will be open for a better run organization that you could join. You’re clearly just a money source and not a member. Why let others get suckered into the making the same mistake?
First, Most, Biggest
Are there other members that feel the same way? And would tipping them off result in those members being blackballed?
I would find a better way to manage the club. Have it written in a plan. Find some members that would back you up, and some new members that would join under that said plan. Then present it.

Sounds like we’re in the same club

Loopervet, Pretty much all of the new members feel the same way and I’m sure that they are supportive of any action taken to initiate some changes. Trust me, I have been a lot more civil than most of these guys in getting to the bottom of this. My attempts at suggesting any changes or inquiries about the dog hunting have resulted in either lies or “Wadda ya gonna do bout it?” Lease owner has been contacted and the ball is rolling.
Good luck to you. If you need a good club to join around the same area give me a call.

Found out some interesting information about this lease, it was sold in December. I guess the president and select few knew this was happening and decided to burn it up the last year. I still feel they had an obligation to relay this info to ALL of the members and at the very least, invite us to the dog hunts. Oh well, guess we were just the bank account to fund their last hurrah. Live and learn!

The 10% that kill and trespass in the name of “Southern Tradition” without regard has actually killed the Southern Traditions. Ignorance at it’s best. Fox pens that are really coyote pens are not helping either.

Upenatem, why did u leave the lease at the Haven???. No dogs and quality deer management ! Sounds like you may be disgruntled. Every club is different and sometimes it may take a season or two for an outsider to get accepted. Just paying dues doesn’t me you’ll fit. Move on, only hurting your seal for. Them boys been hunting there 60+ years!
If it got any better I couldn’t stand it.
Bug Catcher, I’m definitely not disgruntled. If I was, believe me I would have handled the situation a lot worse! As far as the haven goes, I do miss that place. Started out as a good club with great members, but I had to leave. Not sure of your knowledge or affiliation with the club, but let’s just say that wrong is wrong, and the good thing that the original members had going was ruined by some new members who muscled their way in. Friends mean more to me than a deer club, I’ll leave it at that.
