Eastbound 12-3-08

Fished with a star studded crew today, Bob-O, Bad Apple, and Stoner. We decided to drag the Triple Ledge, but it was no go, so we started dropping lead. Started playing leap frog with some commercial boats, but ended up catching 6 scamps, 1 Red grouper, 1 lion fish, and 3 snapper, and a box full of triggers and B-liners. The excitement for today was 2 grown wahoo that kept circling the boat eating everything we threw to them, but a wire line.

The Triple Ledge is lit up, if anyone wants to fill the box with bottom dwellers. For Tuna tomorrow you better run to the South Ledge. We spoke with Free Byrd at the boat landing and he had 10 blackfin in the box, and caught and released one sail. He mentioned pink/white was the flavor.

I’m headed to clean fish now.

Good On You! I’ll talk with Bobby tomorrow but how was the ride out? Curt told me yesterday evening @ Petes Shop you were going today. Maybe someday I’ll be able to take off in the middle of the week to go, O well, I guess I should be happy to have a job.

Don’t forget the couple of mahi, and the blackies were there, just not when we were pullin. Oh yeah, there were 3 drive by wahoo. I’ll put up the couple of pics tonight.

What do you use when fishing that deep. Eletrics, conventionals, bent but rods, spinning? I fished 190’ once with a spinning rod and that doesn’t seem like the best method. That will wear you out.

One like this:

To catch this…

and a cooler of these…

One guy was using electric, I outfished him 5:1 on quality fish. He did catch my bait for me though.

I don’t know …that first pic looks like something your Wifey
got from Jokers Novelties…

Funny you say that…I popped it for him after the photo b/c I thought the other fish in the box would make fun of it.

The “One Guy” was me, and yes you will pull a many of hook with the electric. The problem is the reel has so much torque, that you don’t give the fish a fighting chance and literally just rip his lips off. YES, I do set the drag, but it’s a different set up then the conventional system. I have mine loaded with a 100# power pro, and my leaders are 150#. Basically, you can’t find a quicker way to fill the boat full of triggers and b-liners, but for the big boys it hasn’t been working for me!! I’ll carry both, but I can’t sit back and catch bait for Courtland and the crew anymore. It’s everyman for himself!!

I can’t wait until the next trip!!

David,
Thanks for a great day. It was nice to see how the boat handled on a long trip. Awesome boat, great crew, full fish box, what else can you say!

Guys, looks like another good trip to the deep waters, now if you could only do that on a weekend so that I could participate, that would be even better…

Stoner, did you ever make the trip up to NC for the tuna bite?
