Easter Shad Trip

OhioNavyNuke inspired me with his shad fishing video, so I got out to Moncks Corner between rain showers for a little shad fishing.

Caught 5 - biggest was just shy of 18". Tried a bunch of small jigs, but the chartreuse and white worked best. Left when the rain and wind picked up…great trip!

Someone had a sweet little redneck catfishing setup here - complete with burn-barrel, chair, and rod-holders in the clay…

Two-jig setup worked best for me today…

Sweet! I think ONN may have started a trend here. It’s really a nice ride up to the dam, a couple miles.

Nice work. Did the pelicans give you a fit?

Not really - they were dive-bombing all around, but even when I had a fish in the boat they didn’t pay me any attention…there was a lot of bait popping in the water.

i didnt have to deal with pelicans much last time either with all the bait around. glad to hear theres still a few shad around and doesnt look like you had a sabiki with you but if you try again you can pull up herring as fast as you can drop the line just about anywhere in there downstream of the rail bridge included. i also learned that fighting a blue cat from a small kayak is pretty entertaining as well. one thing for sure i bet you got your exercise in…didnt ya

I ran into you at the launch and chatted for a minute. We ended up with about 200 herring and a 15 lb catfish. I think my wife and I may come and join you guys for the cherry point trip you told me about on saturday.

Good to meet ya…congrats on the fish! Do you use the herring just for bait?

Yes, hook the live herring in the back with a 2 oz carolina rig and let it go in the middle of the channel. I find this time of year you have to use really heavy line, the catfish give up and dont fight so its like reeling in a boat anchor. They are just dead weight and you have to horse them to the boat.

Awesome Lewis.
