Edisto 7/22

My bride of almost 19 yrs accompanied me on the water today, and we had a large time. I like to fish early and my family doesn’t (precious sleep!)

I have been trying hard to pattern the area for the last few years and as Bob Sanders would say, you have to pay your dues before Mother Nature will give up some of her secrets. I think she is pitying me by now  I’d also like to acknowledge RadDaddy, a friend I haven’t yet met in person, for giving me a little direction - and it has really helped,Thanks RAD!

First drop was at a familiar flat, and the fish were there. Leaping out of the water :stuck_out_tongue: In fact, we saw a flatty jump clear out of the water, the second time I’ve seen that, and it was in the same spot. She said it looked like a frying pan jumping.

We chunked plugs and it wasn’t long before I get a nice red on, momentarily, then off. Shortly thereafter, she hooks up a nice trout on the spook jr. Another “flats” trout, finding the trout on the flats is a new thing for me.

Kept at it, tried the fly rod but no takers - as is typical for Edisto, the water is quite dirty making sight fishing near impossible. Moved back down the bank and tried the skitter walk again. Pow! Nice red on… Got it to the boat finally and its a really nice red, my biggest topwater red at 28.75"

If you look carefully you can see the plug near his mouth

Decided to change tactics so we went to another new spot, with the tide pushing against it … a small feeder creek surrounded by oyster mounds. Put a seafood special (butterflied finger mullet and salad shrimp) out and before I could get another rod rigged, big take and big pop. This happened 2 more times so instead of re-rigging every 5 min, I decided to move up the bank to another good looking spot.

Put a rod out and within 2 minutes a big take. My wife is on the rod. Stripped about 100 yds of dra

awesome. thanks

Excellent post and pictures. Congrats on a good day.

Great job, Op…and Ms. Op.

Congradulations on a great day and getting your better half to join you. My wife loves to fish and I guess I have never realized how fortunate I am to have a wife that LOVES to fish. We, too, were out yesterday but stayed close to home in the Toogoodoo River and ICW between Metal Trades and Wadmalaw Island. One big shark and a decent trout was our take. Did you fish the North or South Edisto? What ramp did you use? We normally use the Dawhoo and run to Otter Island/Bennett’s Point area but were pressed for time yesterday. I did notice the water was a lot clearer than what we have been seeing and the live well look like a bathtub all day with the gin clear water. Thanks for the report and I bet those big fish got your wife more interested in going out in the future!

Those are some great pictures. Looks like a fun time.

Nice pictures and report! One day I will get down that far. Furthest I have been is metal trades putting in at limehouse. Too many good spots to pass up. One day I will trailer down to Dawho and find some new water.

Iain, remember there is a boat ramp at the end of Parishville Road which would save you about 18 miles RT. No dock but two lanes and pretty safe. Ramp is surrounded by houses and owners are boaters and fishing folks.

Iain,… likewise - I have never fished between Toogoodoo and the harbor, but one day will!
We in Charleston are so blessed to have SO MUCH water to fish, and so little time :sunglasses:

It is indeed a blessing to have a wife who enjoys fishing. Mine, unfortunately, does not. She’s not against fishing, just feels sorry for the fish.

Congrats on a wonderful marriage, beautiful wife, and thanks for the great report.

I would be willing to bet those floats also have an alternate use on the Whaler. Dave is a go-go gadget kind of guy on his little Whaler!

Great day Mr. & Mrs. Opti!

Great job Optiker. Let’s go fishing next time you are down.

That would be great Rad, I’ll give you a call. I want to tell you more about my scouting after our last call.
