Went from Port Royal out to Edisto Banks and got skunked. First lines in at 7:00 am tried high speed (17 knots) trolling with a couple of wahoo wackers starting at 160 out to 350 feet. Changed to 6 lines with ballyhoo with a variety of presentations including naked, blue/white ilander, planer etc. It was dead. Saw a few flyers out around 300 feet. Could not find a weedline, tidal rip or temperature break. From other reports looks like we were not alone. Phase of the moon, cold front, cloud cover, technique, tide, what?? Looking for advice on what went wrong?
Ride out was smooth the whole way at 30 MPH, a little bumpy coming back but no complaints.
huh man that stinks, i fished 2 weeks ago on the full moon and still caught fish so im thinkin the moon doesnt affect offshore much, ive always said if u not catchin anything in 30-45 minutes pick up and run around till u find something that looks fishy

The moon definitely does affect offshore fishing
I’ll bite. How does the moon affect fishing? Stronger tides and currents create more well defined rips and thermal gradients?
How about the fish feed all night on a full moon?
Makes sense to me that would affect the fishing.
17 kts sure sounds fast. When I finally get my shot I was thinking 7-10mph…Hope to find out soon enough…

we were out there too. same report !
from what i read, 17 knots is not too fast for highspeed trolling…in the article i read, they were going over 20 knots. said they caught wahoo over 100 lbs. that way. just what i read anyway.

17 kts is fast. Google "wahoo high speed trolling" and you'll find numerous articles on the gear and technique and they all state roughly 14-20 kts or as fast as your gear can handle. We were trolling with a 24 ounce weight and were at the drag limit of our TLD25 reel. 7-10 MPH is a good speed for the ballyhoo rigs.
