Broke the Deveaux Banks by Seabrook at about 5:15 to meet a odd cross sea that forced our course a little north of ideal, but all in all I thought it wasn’t that bad. We made 25 Knots for about 2 hours with a stop or two and had lines in 7 miles short of the banks at 7:30.
Immediately the wayback goes off, “Yes, gonna be a good day”…10lb phin. After that the words of the day were “■■■■” and "It, for a few reasons. Between the rubber hooks, scattered weeds, and the Cudas clipping the tails off my baits, we worked to keep even 5-6 lines out, and never got a full spread out without at least some grass. We actually had a pretty consistent bite for about three hours, but could only manage 3 Dolphin. Lost a 25lb bull at the boat and had a few other fish throw those rubber hooks.
About noon we decided to head in the direction of homw, knowing the weather may be bad, we set out for some bottom dropping. On the way in we high speed trolled some lures and had a hard knock down, "■■■■ and “It” again. Threw the hook just out of site of the fish.
Made it to the Edisto Reef in some good seas, and made a pass or two and picked up a first… a 30" Redfish…never caught one offshore, but send him back to the deep and as soon as that happens, rod tips goes down and something is on like I hav enever felt on a bottom rig… Unfortunately it is on a cheap 4/0 with 30lb test set up for SeaBass. An hour later those words show up again, and whatever it was has about 30yds of line swimming behind it. In a hour, we never got the fish to lift its head. The fish would take 20yds of line, and we would gain it back by backing down on him, but never moved him consistently. Someone needs to take a 14/0 electric with 200lb braid and find out what he is .
All in all a very nice day on the water. Didn’t see a drop of rain all day, and the seas laid down wonderfully (made 40knots on the way in). Didn’t see but one other boat all day. Nice day, just not many fish to show for it.
Ethan,
I enjoyed the pictures that you sent me. Looks like you had fun with the rookies.

Yeah the pics were better than the catch, but the bad thing was the experienced crew didn’t do as good this past weekend, so I had to hear about it…of course
Sleepy,
Could it have been an Amberjack? We have caught them fairly consistently this year at the Edisto Off-shore reef. Kinda like hooking a Volkswagon and trying to get it up.
thats exactly what it was like trying to do… i was with him that day… and i fought him for a while… i caught a 175 lb bull shark last year and it didnt have anything on this fish… i dont think it was a shark tho…as long as we fought that fish i believe the 150# mono leader would have got cut by the sharks teeth or his skin… the line snaped at the tip of the rod… that was a big fish

That was my guess too while we were fighting it…, but was hoping it might be a HOSS Grouper. Whatever it was, we didn’t challenge it on that setup. That won’t happen again. Also saw a large school of Spadefish just under the boat, destroying the 15 million jellyfish… someone could give that a try.
Had a great time out there a few weeks ago. I am included in that rookie group!!! Definitely a few rookie mistakes (at least on my end!) out their to say the least, but it was a great time. By the time you got home that night you must have been worn out-non stop work for you all day. Thanks again for the invite, and the fish was incredible! Definitely my best fishing experience to date!
I am always up to head out if you need a spot filled-at least I can drive the boat, once we are out there!

Nate…Glad you enjoyed the trip and the fish… I am hoping to make 1 more run before the old ball and chain gets clasped to my leg. I’ll give you a shout on the next go…My normal crew was waining a little after the last trip…“I think this is my last trip for a few weeks” “I can’t walk this morning”…wah wah… you know… [:I]
