Got out last Wed. and had hits all day. Cuda bite was on. Had 8 cudas with good size, 3 decent kings, 2 wahoo, and a nice amberjack. Times 2 hits. Great day out there. Trolled 150-180. Planer and blue and white was on fire.
yeah, we cut the backstraps off and could see worms coming from the head side and the tail side. We figured we just chunk it. I didn’t really want to take the risk.
I’ve had reef donkey before in a resturant and it was good. I just don’t want to fillet one with the worms and all. I wouldn’t be able to eat it after that picture was in my head. I hear the small ones don’t have as many.
All fish have some type of worm, it’s just a matter of being really small or in the case of the AJ, big. So big that you see them.
If you cut up by the head and then back a little, that meat is usually best. The tail is nasty. I’ve had some AJ that is not bad at all. It’s no grouper, but it isn’t bad.
edistobrad, it is not necessarily the mercury in the cudas you really have to worry about…cigatarrun toxin (not sure on spelling) is the main danger with those nasty critters. Though the toxin is usually only found in fish further south and the caribbean, there has been reports of people becoming ill this far north by eating them. Rare cases, but enough evidence to keep 'em outta the boat for us!
