The wife and I are going to Edisto Island early May for a five day weekend. We normally tow the car behind the motorhome. I have enjoyed some surf fishing in the past.
Now the real question. I have a new bay boat. Would it be recommended to drive two vehicles to tow the boat for some inshore action, or continue to enjoy the surf fishing and the inlet to the north of the campground.
If tow the boat is the recommendation where to put in would be my next question. What to fish for and with. Again not asking for secret spots, but just ideas.

I would bring the boat as it really widens your options, May is a great time, not too hot and all the species should be biting. You can put in at Steamboat and fish Russell Creek and surrounding areas, docks are good. You can also put in at the Marina and fish the creeks on that side. All the creeks have fish, you have the disadvantage of not having spots so I would take a few hours at low tide and look around for areas with a lot of shell and docks that look fishy. It will take you a bit longer to find fish than those who fish here a lot, but you should do fine. Have a good time!
Not to sure how far you would need to travel, but it is always nice to be out on a boat during vacation. As said above, I would always check out places at low tide first, preferably rising. Its nice to be able to see an oyster bed in the middle of a creek, that you wouldnt of seen at a higher tide.
My family has had a house at edisto for years and we enjoy having the boat down with us. A boat at edisto opens up endless possibilites. The fishing can be great for many species. I am a young guy with young children so I dont target the tougher species I go after whiting and sharks which you can catch just about anywhere around edisto. Use the same baits you would in the surf. I use peeled fresh shrimp or squid for the whiting and then after I catch a couple I hook a few on some big rods and chum a bit and see what we can catch. But there is also otter island for a destination to pick up sand dollars or anything you find interesting, like I said the areas to explore are endless. You can also crab from the boat the same as you would from a dock execpt no one else can get to these areas in the creeks without a boat. Also there is a Edisto forum with guys that will give you good info also. Some of them live on edisto and know what is going on year round. Hope this helps. Put in at steam boat or the marina. Do not go to Live Oak they charge a arm and a leg I think it is 10$ per person plus the current is rough and it can be a pain to load the boat if the tide is running. If the tide is running out and you miss the trailer your boat may end up tore up under the dock.
