Hope all law breakers learn their lesson. Just shows knowledge is the most important thing to have on the water. If you can’t id it release it!

Yeah this is the crowd u draw when u do a big fish kill tournament. I can kill it but I can’t ID it. Sandbar sharks and duskies are easy to ID, really all sharks are. I bet they all thought they killed bull sharks.

Sounds to me like everyone is talking about it but nobody can say for sure that they were not legal.
If DNR was on the scene you would assume they would have had a look at the top 3 sharks weighed in, even if just for entertainment.

Lots of tournaments just measure them boat side and cut them loose.
I’m not a fan of killing animals that I’m not going to eat… but unless an authority says otherwise, I’m not sure they broke any laws.

It sounds like this tournament is coming to an end. Next year you better believe there will be some serious pressure to cancel it.

Just because they work for the DNR don’t expect them to be able to ID fish properly.

Are there any pics of the Supposed illegal species? I saw the top three in the local paper and all look liked Tiger to me. But I am by far a shark expert. I can’t believe some of the spectators, other fishers, or officials didn’t say anything?

If they did bring in a dusky and sandbar, then I hope appropriate action is taken.

Great point. These folks seem to be getting a lot of negative attention, but so far we have no mention of pictures, evidence or actual charges.
If they broke the law then action should be taken. If they did not break the law, then all of the offended folks should be speaking to their law-makers.

All three look like tigers to me, but I’m no biologist. Where are the pictures of the illegal sharks?

All the incriminating photos were removed from Edisto Water Sports Facebook page two days after they were first posted. You can rest assured law enforcement has the original screen shots or they would not be pursuing action. None of the fish in question were among the top three in weight.

This sounds super negative but maybe if these people receive some punishment people might put a little more thought to what they are killing.

Not negative at all to me 40red. Break the law and pay the price. When laws are not enforced it just encourages certain types to ignore the law.

I would be willing to bet this was a case of ignorance and not willful neglect. No way in hell those guys would kill that big shark, bring it back for all of the island and DNR to see, hang it upside down for pictures, knowing it was an illegal fish.

If you are gonna fish for sharks then you better know what you are getting ready to kill since according to the article over half of the species are prohibited. But you are right Leadenwahboy you would have to be extra dumb to land one and pose for a picture with it if you knew what you had.

I’d have to agree with leadenwahboy, very few folks are educated in shark identification as well as all the different legalities involved, can all but guarantee it’s a case of misidentification.

Does not change end result, but shark regs are confusing to 95% of the fishermen in the area from what I have seen in the industry

IMO, ignorance of the law is just as bad as disregarding the law. if you are going to go out fishing, you need to take the time and learn the laws of the area and species you are fishing. I’m not going to go into another state carrying my firearm without first reading and knowing what the laws are for that specific state, and even county is some areas.

If I’m posting, its because I’m sitting here at work, dreaming about fishing.

In my eyes its worse if they didn’t know. What kind of idiot does stuff they don’t know about. It is so easy to self educate these days there really is no excuse. If knowledge is power than their shark game is weak. Really makes me believe who ever weighed them in are the wrong kind of shark fishers. I use not to shark fish because I did not have the knowledge or gear to do it properly. I educated my self got the gear and fished with a crew of shark fishers until I got my skills up. Now I can tag and release safely for me and the shark.

Point is, they didn’t “ignore the law,” they just weren’t educated enough on it and on ID’ing the species in question.

Also, some of this can fall on the tourney organizers. Did they have a captains meeting where the rules and regulations were gone over? Did they mention that there are protected species out there that you should not kill those fish?

I’d be willing to bet some of those fishermen saw “shark tournament” and figured they could go fishing and just kill the biggest shark they catch because “it’s a tournament, man! They kill big billfish in tournaments!”

The catch is to participate in a Federally permitted shark tournament each vessel must first apply for and obtain a federal recreational Highly Migratory Species angling permit at a cost of $25. This permit is also required for all participants in tournaments where billfish and tuna are among the target species. Thus each vessel/captain should have been aware of the rules.

Maybe the solution is to require a training course to get the HMS permit, like we have to do to get the hunting license. Maybe it could save some fish.

Big fine and community service or jail for failure to follow those 2. A law should have consequences when broken.

MuddyWaterFisher - looks like a training requirement for sharks is coming next year: http://www.nmfs.noaa.gov/sfa/hms/news/news_list/2017/2/a5b_feis_021717.html

Alternative A2 says that there will be a new shark endorsement on the HMS angling permit. Getting the endorsement will require a short online shark ID training.
