yes there is a permitted elver fishery in SC. Limited entry 10 permits total as opposed to hundreds in Maine. Deadline for applications for lottery for 2014 open spots is soon.
There used to be a guy in the james Island area that had a eel trap permit. They had a story in the news paper several years ago about it. The way i remember it is he sold most if not all to the Asian market.If my memory serves me right"and some times it does NOT" I think there was some controversay with DNR.
“that guy” is a friend of mine, and he makes a very good living off glass eels. He has a man come over from Korea (lives at his house) to supervise the handling and shipment of the eels. They ship them as babies, and grow them out in huge tanks to make Unagi for the insatiable sushi markets
