Was throwing some shrimp under a dock last night and this came up on my line. I believe it’s an American Eel? not what I was looking for but interesting!
Not an American eel; they have a lower jaw that protrudes past the top jaw. What you caught is the opposite. Possibly a type of conger.

Looks like an American eel to me, I catch them all the time in the river. Not sure about Conger?
Ima wait on Barbawang.
Cougar Fish,
In general where did you catch this?
My friend caught one last week in Awendaw Creek. I have been fishing in Lowcountry a long time but never caught or saw these till now.

The head might be somewhat different from the ones I catch, hard to tell by the picture, but the body looks the same as an American.
I’ve caught probably a dozen of those and always assumed they were American eels, but like those that mention above, the mouth structure does look different than the American eels I see on the field guides.
Either way, they are slime pots and will make a massive mess out of your line and terminal tackle. And clothes. And boat.

Probably a shrimp eel. Ophichthus gomesii. Common 'round these parts.
Not an American eel for sure. I think ekman nailed it, shrimp eel. Or a juvenile conger. Have to see it’s fins good to tell the difference.

In Mt Pleasant,I had my bait lying on the bottom so I assume he was just slithering along and bit on it. Thanks folks for the help with the ID, was happy to send him back into the water
