Gave Thursday a go. Took the day off and was able to twist the arms of my son and his buddy to skip school and so it was.
The bite was way better than last trip but was one of those days where we just couldn’t seem to get the fish in the box. Ever have one of those?
We left the house at 5:00 and broke the jetties at 6:00 to bumpier than expected seas.
Had lines in the water in 140ft by 8:00 inside the outcrop. And it was slow as we trolled deeper towards SW banks. Scattered weeds and flying fish all over. Weed lines trying to form just not quite there.
Finally had a big fish on around 10:00 on the way back. And then it wasn’t on. Later … the same thing happened again.
Then finally found some action in a temp break around 280 ft just south of SW banks. Had a double hookup… put the fish on the way back in the rod holder and boated the closer dolphin. We grabbed the other rod and there was something big on, or felt like it anyway. We though it was something good. It turned out to be a dolphin that we think got tail wrapped when the line when slack in the rod holder. It was like reeling in a log and took forever (we all took turns) only to grab the leader, have it unwrap and spit the hook. And it was a big fish. The big one that got away. Cursing etc …
Reeling in the log …
Had another fish hit the outrigger with my favorite bird daisy chain … most of the birds had been broken and glued back together … well worn with character … we dorked again and the lines got crossed … and then the mono ahead of the chain got cut somehow … cleanly … we can’t figure it out … maybe a toothy fish was also in the area. In any case the last I saw of my favorite teaser was when the now free dolphin (another big one that got away) skied out of the water with that chain still attached. It was c
