Sounds like the bite was on today. Nice report…

Better get you a Umbrella retriever if you are going to pull them. They work like a champ!! I got tired of loosing my rigs, so I got one and knock on wood havent lost one since…

I second this … I haven’t lost a U-Rig since I left them in my basement three years ago …

I’ve been meaning to get one for a while but just haven’t done so. I have pretty good success not losing them. Especially since I got the Navionics chip. Usually have good success getting them back even when they get hung. Rick, it’s been nice changing it up and leaving the live bait alone. On tournament day I may just bring about 25 rods so. I have options.

Appreciate the report, Mike. Sounds like you did alright. Fished my end of the lake with boards yesterday in Beards for a couple hours after picking up some bigger (for me anyway) chad at Neds. Didn’t see much and not much action. One keeper and a few misses. Still it was a better day weather wise than most have been this year.

Mike - you guys should consider pulling U-Rigs over there … It’ actually not that hard of a thing to do especially now since they don’t really have to run so deep with the current water temps …

There’s a guy on your side that pulls them religiously this time of year from Susie to the main … If you get a couple of three arms and strip them down to 4 quarter oz jigs it won’t be too much work for you guys setting them back about 75- 100 feet

Seriously … you actually responded to that … Sad EJ … sad …

I actually have a u-rig that I found lying in the middle of the boat ramp at LHM. Not sure what that means finding it there. I’ve got an old salt water boat rod that I could use to pull it with. Since this is all new, what pound test is typically used? Might wait on a u-rig retriever.

I use my TLD25 and Penn Squall 60LD offshore trolling set ups for Umbrellas. I have them so may as well use them. Some spooled with 30# MoMoi Diamond some spooled with 80# braid and 80# mono top shot 100 yards. Others mainly use normal level winds similar to Penn 309’s. On my Yumbrella’s I normally use 6500-8000 class spinning reels. I’ve even used my Okuma Magda 20dxt on Striper rods for Yumbrellas.

Mike, I just use the same thing I use for everything else … My downrods are my planer rods are my trolling rods … 8’6" Okuma Deadeye MedHeavy with an Okuma Coldwater 20 or 30 lined with 20# Ande mono … I just change the leaders for lures/rigs/spoons depending on how the situation pans out …

I’ve only ever lost two U-Rigs … the first one I lost had at least two fish on at the time and there was a manufacturing flaw and the ring pulled out of the U-Rig … I called Capt. Mack and he sent me a whole new setup the same day …

the second one I hung in a tree by Bomb not paying attention to what I was doing … Actually broke my rod trying to get it off the tree …

Since then, I’ve not lost one and contrary to what some might believe (cough cough … Loon … cough cough) I actually like pulling U-Rigs … Liz hates it though … if you want to get them down 30 - 40 feet you gotta let out 200 - 250’ of line and she hates reeling all that back in …

But this time of year you should be fine letting out 100’ to get them down to 15’ …

A good starter rig is the Capt. Mack 3 arm … It comes with 7 jig heads, but I only run 4 (one on the end of each arm and one down the middle) … if I use a 4 arm, then I’m only using 5 … You can trick out the rest of the arms with blades or just run them plain which is what I do …

There are a thousand variations and ways to trick them out, but I’ve always done just fine with just the basic setup thinned out …

The actual yumbrella’s are my favorite of the 5 bait rigs but had this one laying around so trying some new baits and jig heads/weights. Made these tonight. Trying them in the morning if anyone wants to fish 8-11:30 or so. Either way I’m fishing rain or shine. It’s gonna be warm. Going to try same area. Probably roll out of Acapulco and hang a right and head towards the gap and around the 2 shallows and back up. I’ll be running Umbrella, 2 Yum/5-bait rigs and 2 downriggers with an HJ-14 and HJ-12. I have the f-18 too but it hasn’t been as hot as the 14.

Sounds like some good information for “newbies” on u-rigs. I’ve got the stuff and since no real investment on my part is necessary, might as well give it a try. It can’t be any more painful as when I first broke in with planer boards. And at least I know that you don’r use a big dip net to retrieve the u-rig once you hook up. Thanks guys.

one more thing … you want to be trolling between 2 and 3 mph … on my boat I just use the big motor and put it in gear and I get 2.5ish right off the bat …

Nothing wrong with them. Still use them periodically(tackle too big for my 6 year old so usually opt for other tackle). Good way to cover/eliminate water and put fish in the boat. Used to make, sell and fish them on Clarks Hill. Moved back to Murray post fish kill(s) and got bored. Went light tackle/fly and just stuck with it. Each their own. Not gonna lie…bait is perfect for kids and the few trips with MM lately and seeing the bites has reminded me of fishing bait on the Hill.

Besides…best trolling is on this site

Personal best on the Hill on homegrown u-rig in January 06 near Ft. Gordon. Few ounces shy of 30#.
