My usual approach with my filet knife is to peel the filet off, starting at the top of the fish and then peel off down to the backbone, then on down to the belly. With the power knife, do I just take the whole filet in one pass? Start at the head, right?
thanks, NaClH20
That’s what I do, But flatties are a little different.
Hey next time wave at me with all your fingers.
thanks - for flatties, I’ll still use the filet knife.

I still use the electric on them too, you will be amazed at how good of a filet you can get with it. I let them any fish stay in the cooler for a while to stiffen up makes the cleaning a little eaiser.

NaClH20 your technique should be the same regardless of whether you use an electric or not. Gotta work close to the bones and around the backbone just as you described with your “usual approach.”
One pass will certainly lose some meat due to the backbone.

Gave a Rapala electric cleaning knife to a buddy last year for Christmas, and it died during sport fishing season??? Any others you folks would recommend? When it worked, it was great.
h20gul, I’ve read here that most are made by the same manufacturers in China. The only difference is the price, from Browning, Rapala, to the Store brand, there all pretty much the same knife, different price. Hope this helps!!
Thanks, Mixed Nutz! So, you’re saying to go back to the old fashioned way of using filet knives and avoid the electric ones altogether as all that’s out there is pretty much the same? I remember years ago fishing with a guy on Fripp Island that he used the same old double blade electric knife my parents used to carve turkeys at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Worked like a charm!
No ma’am, I’m saying most of the electric “FISH Cleaning” knives are made by the same folks, so why pay more for the “Name”, only!!
CONGRATULATIONS on becoming a “SENIOR MEMBER”!!!
Gotcha! Thanks bunches on all accounts, Mixed Nutz!
Are the blades that Wally World sell in the fishing section any different than the blade for my Turkey cutting set?

I also use a GE turkey carving knife. Works just as good as the others.
Excuses? I’ve heard them all!

Save your money. I have had all the so called fishermans filet knives and they all crap out about the same time. Go to wal-mart and get the black and decker electric knife it is in the same section with the appliances. It only costs about 10 bucks and is very powerful.
