My electric start stopped working, replaced the start switch thinking that would do the trick. Unfortunately that didn’t work. Any ideas on where to look next? I’m not real familiar with that aspect of the outboard. It will start fine manually. It is a 1990 25hp 2 stroke. Any help is greatly appreciated.
It’s either the switch, the solenoid (relay), the starter itself, or a bad wiring connection. The switch is the least likely. Take a jumper cable and hook it from the battery positive to the big wire on the starter. If the starter turns, it’s good, if not, it’s bad. If the starter turns, move the jumper to the solenoid input and turn the key. If it turns over now, you’ve got a bad wiring connection or a blown fuse. If it doesn’t you’ve got a bad solenoid. Put the jumper on the other side of the solenoid to verify it.
It could also be a bad battery. Does it click, or make any other noise when you turn the key?

on my 1977 johnson 35, there is a neutral stafey switch that gives me problems from time to time. the set screw vibrates loose
Mountain Dew or Crab Juice. Eeww…sheesh…I’ll take a crab juice.
follow crackers advice, and it will lead you straight to the problem

The fact that it will crank manually rules out the neutral safety switch and the kill switch.

maybe just on the older motor, but mine will pull start in gear (i would not recommed trying this). i re-set the set screw on the neutral safety and the electirc start works every time. i am no mechanic, listen to cracker and chris.

Thanks for the advice. I will give your suggestions a try this week cracker larry. There is no click on the push start but I don’t remember it ever clicking, the battery runs everything else fine, only a few months old.
The starter and the soleniod are both good. Must be a bad connection somewhere? When I hook up jumper cables to the positive end or negative on the start switch the solenoid will click. Any ideas on where to look next?
when i put the jumper cables on the solenoid, the starter immediately spins without me having to press the start switch. if i place the jumper cable on the positive wire of the start switch, the solenoid will click but the starter will not spin if i press the start switch.
